hi. Have started to ttc dc2 and am confused about when i should be ovulating. Firstly i have ds whom we conceived within the first month coming off the pill and didnt know a thing about when you ovulate as we just did it all the time! Those were the days! This time round dh is travelling alot at the mo and only here at w/es hence wanting to work out when im ovulating to make the most of the time we have!

I came off the pill 4 months ago. I had my period as follows .. 28 days after coming off the pill, 30,33 and this month 28. I know i havent been off it long and it takes a while to get out of your system but i dont know if it will carry on like that or not? I tried doing OV sticks last month and according to them i never ovulated?!?! Could i not be ovulating? Also does if i am, will it keep changing WHEN i ov if cycle length changes?

Your average cycle so far is 30 days so based on the fact that ovulation is supposed to occur 14 days before AF arrives the best thing to do is BD every other day from at least day 14/14 to day 21. In my opinion.

I was told by a consultant a few years ago not to use them. They could be making you feel unecessarily despondent.

You can't really tell just by the numbers as people ovulate at different points in their cycles - that's why just counting days for contraception doesn't work! If you want to track your cycles 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' by Toni Weschler is good for teaching you to pick up on the various signs indicating ovulation. OV sticks can be useful but are not infallible, I had a 25 day cycle and ovulated around day 18, so was on my 2nd pack of ovulation tests before they picked it up ... Obviously the more you do it the better, and willmouse is absolutely right that every other day across the whole potentially fertile period maximises your chances. But if your dh is away a lot then you don't necessarily have that option, so knowing your cycle might help you.

You can also try other methods of pin pointing ovulations such as looking for EWCM or temping.

mad4mybaby · 26/02/2008 15:56

the temperature thing just doesnt work for me because i always get out of bed for ds before the whole temp thing. i just couldnt remember to do it. CM thing i didnt really see much change. didnt see the stretchy thing going on...

can someone just please go over for me about the CM? The stretchy stuff is a good sign? Does that mean you have already OV or about to?

How old is DC1 and are you still breastfeeding?

How about ferning? Doesn't matter what time you do it but should tell you when you ovulate (and when you're about to).

Did you see any change at all in CM? Some women just don't get EWCM, but still manage to get pregnant by going for their "most fertile", whatever that may be.

If you can/want to reach it you could also keep tabs on changes in your cervix, which often changes in position, firmness and openness around ovulation.

Good luck

what is ferning???

OP posts:
Tangle · 26/02/2008 16:58

Ferning is looking at the patterns made by a sample of saliva as it dries. The more fertile you are the more organised the patterns should be (think frost "ferns" on a window). There's some info and pictures here. You can buy ferning (or ovulation)microscopes for about £20.

hi mad4mybaby
when you came off pill to try did you get any symptoms?!
i came off pill 23rd of jan
had withdrawal bleed 26th of jan lasted just 2 days.
have had nausea, headaches, forgetfullness, cramps and white plus clear cm
on cd31 no sign of af
tested sat on cd 28 bfn

mad4mybaby · 26/02/2008 20:54

i didnt come off the pill to try, it was because of side effects. We decided to try last month. Was convinved i was pg. Boobs have been killing me, so tired (like early pg!) and just really thought i was. Came on after 28 days. It is really odd and i hate not being on at same time, i thought it would be ok by now..
