Ectopic help

Hi everyone, my daughter (25) is currently pregnant with an ectopic pregnancy.
She had a scan done 3 weeks ago but they were unable to tell her how long she has been in this situation and seem to be going on when her last period was - but as she was bleeding heavily and in pain for a few months I don't think that this is right (bleeding only stopped when she was prescribed iron for anemia).
She has contacted Marie Stoped but they have given her a phone consultation appointment for the 17th.
Is this normal? Is it safe to wait that long?
I'm worried as I think she has been pregnant already for a few months now and apparently ectopic pregnancies can be dangerous if left for too long.
Can anyone please advise?

Has she been officially diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy? By the NHS through the EPU or local equivalent? Or had a follow up scan from the first to see if the pregnancy had developed? How far along was she at the first scan? All these would make a difference in treatment x

I think there is something unusual going on.
What has been implemented after the inconclusive scan? When I had a suspected, but unlocated, ectopic pregnancy I was back in EPAU every 2 days until they knew what was going on. Have they just left her for 3 weeks?

I wouldn't focus on the Marie Stopes assessment. I don't think that is the right place to access what you need. Early pregnancy at the hospital, or midwife to get referred to the correct place.

Hi, after she had the scan (3 weeks ago) she received a text to say make a gp phone appointment for results of the scan - text said this should be done within three weeks, so we phoned the gp and they gave her an appointmentment for 3 weeks time (we didn't know she was pregnant at this stage - scan was to investigate heavy bleeding and pain) but as she was in a lot of pain we cancelled the phone appointment and made an urgent face-to-face appointment on Monday (4 days ago)
She was told at this appointment that she is pregnant with an ectopic pregnancy and told to contact Marie Stopes.
She filled in an online form for Marie Stopes two days ago and received an email for a phone consultation for the 17th.

Sorry if its confusing- I'm worried because she's in pain and everything is taking so long

It sounds very unusual from what I know that she's been referred to Marie Stopes and the NHS isnt dealing with it themselves, I'd ask for a referral to the local EPU - some you can self refer to and some need a GP to refer you and see what they say?

Hopefully you get some answers for her, I can definitely get why you're so worried!

This sounds utterly mad. If I were you and she’s in a lot of pain right now, I’d bypass GP and go to A&E. Today. They will assess, likely do bloods to find out hcg levels, which may indicate the progress of the pregnancy and what might be seen on an scan, and then likely refer to Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU). You may need to call up for an emergency appointment but you’ll have the referral in the system, which is what you need. Most EPAUs are slammed and so won’t see patients without one from a doc or midwife and it doesn’t sound like your daughter has a midwife yet. EPAU is where she needs to be for a suspected ectopic. No idea why Marie Stopes has been recommended.

Where was the initial scan performed?

deliwoman1 · 07/07/2023 11:56

I had an ectopic in 2021 so I get why you’re worried. It’s scary but if you can get her seen by an EPAU she’ll be in good hands.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I called 111 and they're sending an ambulance. They text after to say they're very busy so I'm guessing it won't be for a few hours at least.
If they're not here by the time my partner gets home to look after our son, I'll bring her myself, I just wasn't sure if A&E was the right place.

A&E definitely the right place. I was told to go there if pain got worse (was having my bloods monitored as pregnancy hormone increasing but nothing in uterus on scan). I did and they performed life saving surgery.

I'm so shocked they've missed this for so long despite having US results. I can appreciate the sonographer saying results will be ready in 3wk (I was told something similar at a scan recently) but they would have seen the ectopic on the screen so should have at least said something to DD
Worrying - glad you are taking her to the hospital though that's the best place x
