Fertility assessment

Hi was wondering if anyone has had an online fertility assessment recently with NHS?

we just had our fertility assessment appointment through today for 1 month time after a referral from my GP. It’s an online 25 minute appointment I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into what we can expect? And what information I need to prepare if anything. Husband has had semen analysis done (one normal one low count) and I’ve had bloods done (normal) I’m super super excited to finally be getting somewhere (6 years TTC and counting!!) Xxxx

@Mrsrmcc how did you get on with the app?

FlyOnTheWall89 · 05/08/2023 21:07

@Mrsrmcc you may have more luck on the infertility board maybe with more responses.

My initial appointment was on the phone and the doctor went through all our results and made a suggestion about the route to take going forward. We had MFI and he suggested IVF with ICSI. He explained how the IVF funding works and suggested applying for it immediately and gave us an idea of time frame etc. it wasn't much more than that! Maybe be prepared with some questions you would like answers to.

Best of luck!

I haven't had an NHS one but I'd be expecting them to check womb and ovaries for activity (follicle count, evidence of corpus luteum, check uterine lining thickness, shape, absence of abnormality) fallopian tubes.
Bloods - check AMH and check progesterone, oestrogen, FSH and LH (or plans to do so)
Understand your gynae history, possibly family history.
Explain IVF/ICSI options.

Thank for for your replies! They are sending us for IUI, have internal scan on 14th then HSG test soon after, not looking forward to those but super excited to be finally getting somewhere with everything. Fingers crossed everything is good down below 🤞🏻 xx

@Mrsrmcc I'm super surprised IUI is suggested - it has a very very low % success rate. I would personally challenge this. I had a HSG and became pregnant naturally the month after on month 15 of trying. I had no pain whatsoever during the procedure but it does really vary person to person. I think for a lot of people though, it is much less scary than they think it will be. Very quick too! Good luck!

They suggested medicated iui as there’s no known (as of yet) problems with either of us except slightly low sperm, then onto ivf if it fails as ivf is more invasive. I’m not sure if it’s because of my age (29) or what I’m not sure why she suggested iui I’m not sure I can challenge it as it’s through nhs though. Yeah I’ve heard some horror story’s about the hsg so shitting it slightly but makes me feel better to hear someone had an ok experience 😆 how long did your hsg procedure take? X

You can definitely challenge it - I was 31 when I was having investigations. Oh so so quick - maybe 5/6 mins tops. The nurses just talk at you as a way to distract you and you can see the dye on the screen going up and through and the doctor explained what was happening as she was doing it. I walked home and had no pain. Obviously was thrilled to fall pregnant the following month - maybe it made a difference, maybe coincidence, who knows! Best of luck!

@Mrsrmcc best of luck. I had HSG recently (happened to be on day 16 of my cycle, have had my first period since. I did take ibruprofen and paracetamol beforehand on their advice, but only felt sharp twinge for all of 20 seconds if that in my case. Got my results there and then and talked through it. They found no issues in my case. I felt fine after. I did find this period a bit painful but I don’t usually get period pains. As previous poster said the infertility boards are quite helpful. We are TTC second (Dd is 4) and we’ve been TTC for 2 years with a MMC in dec 2021.

We have had initial with fertility clinic (NHS) and had AMH blood test and HSG and waiting on partners app in September for dropping off his semen analysis (there’s been a long wait for this). Had initial tests with GP and my progesterone appears low suggesting no ovulation but we’re unsure if tested at right time as my cycles are anything from 26 days to longest 44 days. Had Pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound twice via GP due to being unclear, but no issues found however they weren’t able to count follicles due to it not bearing clear apparently I have long cervix and my ovaries like to move around. Hoping the HSG report which hopefully il get may have seen a bit more as I only got advised it was clear and no issues. I do have acne on back and shoulders, irregular periods, mood up and down, etc so GP initially queries PCOS or Polycystic ovaries etc.

Wishing you the best of luck x

Hey ladies sorry it’s taken me so long to reply it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks. Had assessment and abdominal scan (everything fine) husbands got his test wash sample on Monday to make sure his semens good enough for iui then onto hsg test to check tubes, all being well onto iui. The reason she’s putting us forward for iui is because we only get funding for 3 cycles of iui and 1 cycle of ivf. I should’ve asked really but I was a bit overwhelmed, is 1 cycle of ivf literally just 1 chance at getting pregnant? And also what happens if everything fails do they just leave you to it as funding has ran out? I’m feeling a bit like I’m going into a hole in my mind now everything’s happening I’m starting to panic that it’s not gonna work and then what do you do it’s just quite scary to think about 😫
