How long to wait after miscarriage?

Hi all,

Wondering if I could get some opinions/advice on how soon to begin TTC again after early miscarrage....

I had a chemical pregnancy in February of this year, and an early miscarriage almost 2 weeks ago at 6+3. The bleeding has now stopped and pregnancy test is negative, I think I will probably ovulate this weekend. Is it too soon to try again then, are there risks to getting pregnant again that soon?

When I went to the EPU for my scan after miscarriage she said to ring them immediately when I get my next positive pregnancy test and they will offer me early scans and to see a consultant who may put me on progesterone and aspirin. I feel a bit reasurred that extra support will be offered, I am also waiting to hear back from the GP with results of bloods that were taken during my pregnancy.

I've read online but research seems to be mixed on how long to wait and if its safe to try again immediately.

Grateful for any advice!

Hey, sorry for your loss. 💖 I had my first ovulation on 18th june since my mmc in may and I tried straight away... Though I don't think it's worked and in hindsight kind of wish I'd have waited til I'd had one period first because of the worry it's caused me the past 10 days symptom watching etc. But whatever feels right for you... I've seen some women have conceived again before their first period 🤞

thejollytrolleydolly · 28/06/2023 16:19

@Janeykat first of all I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I would say if you feel ready to try again then go for it. There are no medical reasons for you not to, doctors usually advise waiting until after one period so it's easier to date the pregnancy and it might be too soon mentally for some people. I also have had a MMC 4 weeks ago and we have already started trying again so we are currently waiting to see if it's AF or BFP this month. Just do whatever is right for you 😊

Janeykat · 28/06/2023 18:54

@Kellyaust and @thejollytrolleydolly Im sorry you both had losses too and I hope this cycle goes really well for you🤞🤞 my doctor rang me this evening and told me that all the bloods taken during pregnancy came back normal and that there was no reason to wait so that reasurred me a bit.

Best of luck to you both

Hello @Janeykat and I'm sorry for your loss. I also had an early miscarriage a few days ago. May I ask what blood tests did you do? Did they test you for Toxoplasmosis which can cause miscarriage?

Janeykat · 29/06/2023 06:31

Hi@AnnaLina Im sorry for your loss also.

The blood tests were the regular pregnancy ones done before my miscarriage so testing vitamin levels, thyroid check, stds etc. I dont know if they check for toxoplasmosis, I doubt it🤔I do have a cat so I have probably been exposed at some stage, although had been staying away from the litter tray during pregnancy.

I didnt get any investigate blood tests done afterwards as I think that is generally done after 3 miscarriages, the doctors I spoke to said it was most likely some sort of chromosomal issue but that I would get more support during any future pregnancies.

They told me to wait three months, when I asked why they told me it was so I could repair mentally. I thought the only way I could repair mentally was by getting pregnant again. We tried again the next month and conceived our lovely DD.

Janeykat · 29/06/2023 07:30

@cuckyplunt aww thats lovely to hear that you concieved again so quickly. Its so strange how there is such conflicting advice, how can they say everyone needs 3 months to repair mentally! I was told different things even by doctors in the same hospital.
Im glad it all worked out for you and thank you for sharing your story!

I was told it's advised to leave a full cycle ie have one period before trying again, but that I'd have a higher chance of conceiving in the 3 (or 6) months after miscarriage.

1st time I didn't feel ready before I had a period. 2nd time I was still bleeding so not allowed PIV until that stopped.

B1993 · 29/06/2023 08:21

Hi, sorry for your loss! 💔

I also had an early loss last year. I tried again immediately after the bleeding stopped and got pregnant that cycle. Baby boy is now here and is almost 6 weeks old... he's perfectly healthy and an absolute dream! 🥰 He was measuring/born small but think that's completely unrelated as my first born was also on the smaller side.

Good luck this cycle, I hope you get your postive! 🤞🏻

Janeykat · 29/06/2023 09:40

@Whataretheodds yes I was wondering if it would be better to have a period first, the person who scanned me said I still had some clots that would come out in my next period so I wonder if it could impact on a pregnancy negatively if I got pregnant before then. But also it feels like Im wasting time waiting potentially 6 weeks...but perhaps I am overthinking it.

@B1993 aww thats a great success story, congratulations on your lovely new baby😊🥳

I was told the same thing 2 weeks ago I still had some clots left to come out with next period, but I felt such a strong will to try again so I did... I'm on 11dpo so will see, I've had many symptoms but still getting bfn so probably haven't caught on but 🤞

log51 · 29/06/2023 10:35

Hi all and firstly I'm sorry for the losses. I had a chemical pregnancy in December, felt ready to try on the next cycle and I am now 28 weeks pregnant :) To me, if you're mentally ready, losing a month (or for me it would have been more as I have quite long cycles) for the sake of being able to date the pregnancy with a few more days accuracy wasn't worth it! I was fairly nervous at the start of the pregnancy but not then really from the 6 week mark when the exhaustion set in, honestly did not have the energy to be nervous!!

Girlfolk · 29/06/2023 10:37

Sorry for your loss OP. I think you’ll be fine to try again as soon as you feel ready and it’s good to hear you’ve been offered extra support from EPU in your next pregnancy. I haven’t been offered that and I had a miscarriage of twins at 15 weeks. They just told me it’s recommended to wait a cycle but I think that’s just for dating reasons.

thejollytrolleydolly · 29/06/2023 11:02

@Kellyaust me too, did a early detection clear blue digital this morning and it was BFN been having a lot of pains low down today but still no AF 🤦🏽‍♀️

Kellyaust · 29/06/2023 11:29

@thejollytrolleydolly oh I'm sorry it's still bfn, I haven't even tried another test I can't deal with the bfn 😪 I'll just wait til Sunday I think 🤞

thejollytrolleydolly · 29/06/2023 12:12

@Kellyaust fingers crossed for you! If AF still hasn't come by Sunday I will test again then too. It's just weird I go between nothing and intense back ache and cramping 0-100 😅 I just want to know one way or another!! X

Kellyaust · 29/06/2023 12:14

@thejollytrolleydolly same!!! I'll lose all symptoms for like 30 mins n be like yeah definitely ain't pregnant... Then something will happen like extreme and then I'll be saying to myself how can I not be pregnant!! Feel like I'm going round the twist 😅x

Faz469 · 29/06/2023 12:16

We got caught in august with a chemical pregnancy (despite being on the implant). We were planning to try at some point though and waited till the October. I had my implant out and we actually conceived that day. I'm now 37 weeks pregnant and can't wait to meet out little boy. Glad we waited the extra couple of months though.

Whataretheodds · 29/06/2023 12:19

Based on your update on what the sonographer said, yes let the clots come out.

Give the bean the best chance of implanting and growing without anything else fighting for space on your endometrium.

Bookbeb · 01/07/2023 09:44

I had an early chemical and debated waiting a full cycle before trying again, but then decided not too. Got pregnant again right after and with twins! There are some theories you are extra fertile after a miscarriage, but then again there are theories about everything 😆 Sorry for your loss and good luck x

Janeykat · 01/07/2023 14:44

I think i might not try this month until after this period, give my body a chance to get back to normal. I've started taking more vitamins and my partner has too so i'll give them a chance to work😅 @Bookbeb wow twins, thats amazing!! Its lovely to read all the stories of people getting pregnant again quickly, its made me feel much less panicked.

I had a chemical in march and conceived straight away the next month. Currently 10 weeks with twins.

ttcttc · 01/07/2023 16:05

I had a mc 25/26 December (bled from around 20th though). I had my period 19th Jan and 11th Feb had a positive pregnancy test. I'm 24 weeks pregnant now.

I just took the stance I probably won't get pregnant right away so wouldn't have been upset if I wasn't. I'm low risk for everything and baby seems to be coming on fine (kicking me to death even with an anterior placenta!). I've felt worried about things though but I think I would have been even if it was 12 months until I conceived.

Do what feels right for you. How far on we're you last time? I think I was 7 weeks ish x
