How long after birth control .....

Hi ladies,

I'm on cycle 2 of TTC#1. Im 30, 31 soon. I was on the progesterone only pill (desogestral) and I've been on some form of birth control since I was 15..

I've been tracking since the day after my withdrawal bleed with LH tests (easy@home) and using the Premom app. And im yet to see anything near a peak or positive test. I've since my withdrawal had two further bleeds, one end of may, another 22 days later for 4 days.

My question is, how long after coming off birth control did it take for you to start ovulating? Everything I've read refers to it being an almost immediate thing ... which, for me, it clearly isn't. Which is making me worry that there maybe something wrong.

Thank you in advance.

It took me a year after coming off my pill. I had my normal withdrawal bleed but nothing for the next nearly 12 months. I am ovulating now but my cycles are still long and irregular 6 months later. I felt like a medical anomaly while I was waiting for my cycle to return, everyone seemed to say it should come back straight away but it clearly wasn't the case.

Really hope yours settles sooner!

When I came off hormonal contraception (after being on it for 13 years) it took about 3 months to have a period. I didn't have a withdrawal bleed straight away, just had what I think was a normal period, but I wasn't TTC at the time and then had a copper coil.

Why do you think you haven't ovulated? It's sometimes tricky to catch your peak even when you know to expect it. Have you had rising LH on your OPKs or has it just been at baseline?

If you wanted to confirm ovulation you can pay for an at home progesterone test, which would give you a pretty good idea if you have a regular ish cycle and know when to take it. You say you've had bleeds, are these at the regular sort of time for a period? Personally I would leave it until you've been off hormonal contraception for 3-4 months then go to GP if you're still worried and don't think you're ovulating, although they might tell you to wait longer, I'm not sure.

I Bbc was pregnant 1 month after coming off what was called the mini-pill way back then.
Second pregnancy was nearly 9 years later.

@Anon9899 oh really! See I had a withdrawal bleed 3 days after stopping birth control. And since I've had 2 further bleeds but I've been tracking ovulation with LH strips since after my withdrawal bleed and got nothing.. were you trying to conceive when you came off? Did you speak to a Gp?
But that's exactly how I feel - everything I read everyone's seems to have returned to normal almost immediately!

@LucyLoopyLu so I've been tracking with LH test strips since my withdrawal bleed finished. I've since had two bleeds but they're not technically classed as 'periods' I've been told because you can only have a true period after ovulation. And since testing (twice daily) I haven't got anything that resembles a positive - almost baseline continuously. I've just started to track BBT also.. feeling really deflated by it.
Hoping something will start kicking in soon, just didn't expect there to be a delay. We're constantly told 'all will return to normal once you stop' so genuinely just expected that.

Hello, just read these and although a while ago hoping for some feedback on people's experiences. I stooped the pull end of last year, had what I thought was a period 7 weeks later, then another one three weeks after that. However, no change in discharge and all negative ovulation tests so thinking maybe it's anovulation? Planning to contact my Dr if no change by next bleed (if I have one).

I stopped the pill on 26th feb and started using ovulation tests strips from 1st march when i started my withdrawal bleeding. I have included a pic as it appears i peaked yesterday and this is day of cycle. Although i did read that the withdrawel bleed wasnt a proper period so im baffled at whethe i ovulated so soon.

Hi ladies, this is so helpful to read. I‘m also hoping for some advice. I came off birth control at the end of march, had my normal withdrawal bleed a few days later, then 2 more ‘periods’ pretty much exactly when expected. Now awaiting 4th but currently 1 day late based on using Flo. Took a test and it was negative so I’m wondering what is going on now. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Frelltastic · 20/06/2024 16:52

Hi @Arcttc. Have you been tracking ovulation? You could of just ovulated a day or two layer hence period could be tomorrow?

Arcttc · 20/06/2024 17:34

Hi @Frelltastic thanks for getting back to me. I’ve only been tracking ovulation on the Flo app rather than testing but it definitely felt like the first month since stopping the pill that it was happening due the some other symptoms! Guess I’ll wait it out for a few more days and see what happens. How long did it take others to get back to normal cycle? Xx

Hey, I came off the mini pill end of April had my withdrawal bleed as normal on 3rd May - got a positive ovulation test on the 17th May and found out I was pregnant 11 days later! Currently 7 weeks - was in total shock at first as thought it would take months just to get used to tracking ovulation. So you definitely can ovulate very soon after coming off pill it is possible
