Ovulation pain, is this normal?

Im currently trying tcc baby no2. Since having my DS I have suffered with ovulation pain but only on the months that I'm ovulating from my right ovary - I can literally feel it. The pain lasts 2/3 days and starts to come around when I get my peak on clear blue and then that night and the day of ovulation the pain is horrific, I have to take painkillers and the only way I can describe it is like a constant stitch like pain which can take my breath away, is actually sore to touch and also hurts more when on the toilet.

I've read that it can be normal to have ovulation pain but I'm not sure if it's normal to have it this painful? I just wondered if anyone has experienced the same type of pain? Thanks in advance!

Hi , I'm I'm officially 2dpo and have pain the right side I've never really noticed before but this month I'm tracking and can tell I've got little cramps the right side they come and go , how many dpo are you ?xx

@Amy95 it's ovulation day today so the pain is so bad and a constant stitch like pain, usually by tomorrow the pain has completely gone so it's definitely ovulation, it's really strange! Xx

I suffer with extremely painful periods (I pass out a few times every period) and ovulation (I’ve needed codeine). Definitely not your usual cramps or a stitch. Currently pregnant and glad I don’t have those pains.

I didn't even know you could get ovulation cramps until yesterday, xx

PacificState · 22/05/2023 11:59

I'm menopausal now but I used to have bad/sharp ovulation pain. If you google 'mittelschmertz' it will explain why it happens!

Yours sounds fairly normal to me but always worth telling the GP and getting it checked out just in case. But on your description I wouldn't panic although I know it's flipping painful.

Endomummy · 22/05/2023 17:51

I do and it’s one of my worst endo symptoms. Right ovaries are often worse than the left for some reason. The pain builds up and gets absolutely horrific, I struggle to walk, bend down, do normal activities etc.

PeeBeee · 22/05/2023 19:34

@mickey1121 me 🙋🏽‍♀️

especially since having dd 13 months ago. Im hoping it will come in handy ttc#2 - this is my first cycle trying. But yeah, I be doubled over in pain! My actual periods are fine, but ovulation is pretty rough!

mickey1121 · 22/05/2023 19:43

@PacificState ah thank you! This has reassured me - hopefully its just normal and nothing to worry about 😊

@Endomummy I'm so sorry your struggle with the pain too! I'm exactly the same and struggle to sleep too. I have read it is a sign of endo, I don't have any of the other symptoms but I'm definitely going to mention it to my GP

@PeeBeee I'm the same, periods I don't suffer at all just an hour before I get a few cramps but ovulation is something else! I had a c section too and always wonder if this is something to do with it - I literally didn't have any pains before I had my son x

A stitch-like pain is how I experience it. And it’s always over to one side or the other. Why is this so hard for you to believe?!

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 22/05/2023 20:16

Mine is also how you describe. I’ve had a kidney stone and it’s not that dissimilar in pain level. I’ve had scans galore but all come back normal.
I don’t get menstrual cramps at all though.

Endomummy · 22/05/2023 20:16

@mickey1121 the other thing is it could be a functional cyst. I’ve had these a lot, it’s when you ovulate and the follicle is filled with blood and fluid, sometimes this happens and it’s deemed normal but can be really painful. They disappear before the next ovulation and don’t impact fertility. These usually cause one sided pain. When I’ve had this it feels like I’ve been shot in my ovary, it’s the only way I can describe it.

DominoRules · 22/05/2023 20:20

I get it on my left - horrible and knackering! I have endo and a complicated cyst on that side which can’t be removed which I think causes mine. I use deep heat patches and paracetamol which help a bit but mostly it’s just riding it out for 24/48 hours.

Thanks for your response. However, I do only get this pain when I ovulate and I know exactly when I ovulate due to tracking month after month. I never said I get a stitch, I described the pain as a stitch like pain. I also never mentioned my right side, just my right ovary. Really helpful though 😊

@Endomummy this is really interesting thank you, I'll definitely read more into these and see what my GP says - I've also read something about c section adhesions can cause ovulation pain too. I'm just hoping there's no link between this and ttc! X

I've got this for the last couple of years. Maybe a slightly different pain but always when ovulating.

Mine is an awful intense pain for about 15 mins (first time it happened I thought we were going to need a and e). That tails off and I feel tender and bruised for a few hours.

I'm actually getting a scan weds to check everything (have had 2 ovarian cysts, o e very large that needed surgery before).

Will feedback if anything found!

Good luck ttc.

That sounds so sore - but hopefully the scan will show up what might be causing it. Yes, definitely do update please, hope all goes well for you! Thank you 😊 x

@mickey1121 I get this after having both my children. It's awful, and like you, I have to take painkillers. The first time I had it, it was on the right side and I was wondering if had appendicitis! I had a scan (unrelated) which happened to also look at the ovaries, and all was fine thankfully. Just so annoying, and odd that it's only developed since having children!

PacificState · 22/05/2023 21:01

I've had multiple dildo-cam ultrasounds (fibroids) and they've always said the ovaries are clear as a whistle. DO get it checked out just in case, but mittelschmertz is reasonably common I think and in itself not a worrying thing. Just bloody annoying! Mine always seemed to strike at about 2am on a night when I needed to get up early the next day, or when I had to be on my feet for hours at some event.

I think mine changed a bit after each pregnancy - I guess your innards get knocked about a bit each time (I am not a doctor as you can probably tell Grin). But I had it right from my teens and it didn't affect my fertility.

Being a woman is so glam 😂

Very painful and I’m not sure why! Yours could be something else if it only started happening after giving birth (I’d never been pregnant before). And thank you!

dreamonlucid · 22/05/2023 23:16

@PacificState Dildo-cam 🤣🤣

I have suffered with ovulation pain since coming off hbc. It’s deep in my right hip and it makes me feel like I need to do the box splits to get rid of it…unfortunately the box splits are not something my 36 year old hips are capable of. It’s painful but handy for pinpointing when to dtd.

I also get the exact same pain when implantation occurs…it’s how I knew I was pregnant again after two miscarriages. Anyone else experienced this?
