How accurate are ovulation tests?

Been using ovulation tests for a while now and according to the ovulation test I did on the 6th May I was ovulating that day. This was a few days earlier than I expected so I was surprised and I actually did one the following day which said I was ovulating then as well. My periods are a little irregular- sometimes I’m 32 days between periods, sometimes it’s more like 42 days. So I test for a week or so around when I think I will be ovulating.

My partner and I recently visited the GP as we’ve been trying for a while with no luck and GP had me book blood tests, including one to see if I was ovulating when I was meant to and the blood test said I hadn’t ovulated. This was on the Tuesday so 3 days later. I know it probably missed it if it had happened, but how accurate are the clear blue tests, does anyone know? I asked the GP but all he said was the NHS don’t recommend them, in the sense that they don’t tell people to rely on them I suppose?

Ovulation tests detect the LH surge that happens before ovulation. Some women will have one or more surges in a cycle and some women have a surge with no subsequent ovulation, eg in cases of PCOS. Nothing wrong with the accuracy of the test, but they don't guarantee you will actually release an egg.

The blood tests to check ovulation should be done around 7dpo so 8 days after a positive opk. So 3 days after your positive opk would have been way too soon so your progesterone would have still been too low to confirm ovulation on the blood test.

I would ring up right after you get a positive opk next cycle and book for 7/8 days later

Thank you both, I really appreciate your advice/info. I want so badly for it to work and every month I get my hopes up and in turn get my partner’s hopes up, and then it ends in disappointment at best and some months utterly devastated.

I found them brilliant. I use cheap fermometer ones once period is over and clearblue as the fermometer start getting stronger. I found both very accurate and I'm currently nearly 6 weeks pregnant. I got pregnant the three times I used them. Unfortunately I had two early losses but hopefully this one sticks. Best of luck
