New job interview while TTC advice needed!

Hi All

first time posting but hope you can offer some sound advice!

I've been struggling in my current job it’s very high stress and pressure (not likely to change anytime soon) and saw an opportunity come up that was similar but much better paid and better benefits.

I’ve been offered an interview but am unsure if moving jobs now while TTC is the right thing to do, my current job has a good maternity policy, and I would have to work three months notice period.

we've been trying since October so about 6 months.

I’m really not sure what to do as the new role involves quite a lot more travelling and an hour commute each way, so some of the extra pay will go on that. I’m worried if I do get pregnant I won’t be eligible for anything other than SMP which would be really difficult for us with our current obligations and would mean I’d have to return to work sooner than I wanted.

Hope someone can offer some sage advice!

thanks so much

I was in this exact situation!

TTC and job offered amazing maternity package but I was so miserable. Saw another job that had better salary but no enhanced mat leave until you’d been there a year. Figured I couldn’t put my life on hold while TTC as had been six months with nothing. So took the job.

Naturally I found out I was pregnant the week after 😂 Too late to rescind notice and had already signed new contract. I ended up with only maternity allowance for the year and a rather awkward chat with new boss about how I’d be starting at three months pregnant..

But tbh it was fine! Yes it was pretty crappy not having an enhanced maternity pay especially in a cost of living crisis but we made it work and I’m back at work now and enjoying the better job and higher salary. You get your paid KIT days too. And a nice tax rebate when you return to work as you’ve not earned enough over the past year.

It’s so hard though! Impossible to know the right decision! Good luck with TTC!

What’s the mat pay at new place
and when would you be eligible?

New role sounds pretty bloody stressful to me when you go back to work.

long commute and lots of travel

Thanks so much it’s really useful to hear from someone in the same boat! I’m definitely not pregnant at the moment but wouldn’t be eligible if I got pregnant in the next year, didn’t mention earlier but I’m 36 now and it’s our first time trying so I’m not sure we can delay. Sounds like you did an amazing job making it work, well done!

Yes it does, but there’s part of me that thinks we should always be trying to get to the next bigger and better role and I’m not sure why.
I’m not convinced I’d be any happier but feeling the pressure not to let husband down and keep increasing salary for mortgages etc in the future. Feeing a bit frazzled at the no as well which probably isn’t helping! Thanks for the honesty it’s really helpful.
