Is 37 too much old to have a third child?

Is 37 too risky to have a third child? Are the chance of having a disabled child too high to risk it. Would a healthy 37 year old be putting their health at risk by having another child at this age. Also is it unfair on the child to have an older parent? Thoughts please?

I had a dc at 37. 4 and one at 43.2.. Def didn't feel old then and don't now at 51!. Enjoyed both pregnancies.

StarL2021 · 30/04/2023 19:55

@summerfinn not at all. Many women have kids at this age even in their early 40s.

scoobiedoobiedoo · 30/04/2023 19:55

I had my second at 39 he is at 11 perfectly fine.

AlltheFs · 30/04/2023 19:56

Don’t be ridiculous.

I had my DC at 41. Are you deliberately trying to be insulting?

Agreed. I think OPs post is pretty rude to be honest.

God I hope not! Otherwise there's no hope for a lot of us on here!!

I'm sure millions of women go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies past 37

Plenty of women in their early forties have children
to ask if having a third child at 37 is too old is absurd

Ragwort · 30/04/2023 20:02

What a ridiculous question, I had my first at 42, and when I tentatively expressed my concerns to my consultant he told me not to be ridiculous.. I was fit and healthy and there was nothing to be worried about. I appreciate it's 'older than the average age' but really nothing out of the ordinary.

Cherryblossoms85 · 30/04/2023 20:02

If you're worried about disabilities get the full genome test done. Harmony tests for the most common issues.

mackthepony · 30/04/2023 20:02

No, it's fine

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 30/04/2023 20:03

You sound like a joke.

If it's you you're talking about, stick to two.

Not in my circles! I suppose if you are from a very different background it may seem unusual but the youngest person in my NCT was 35 and we were all first time parents. My midwife had more than 50% of her caseload over 40.
I think it is you that is either very out of touch or must be used to a very specific demographic of parent.

mnahmnah · 30/04/2023 20:09

Bloody hell. I was 37 when I had my second. I certainly didn’t consider myself old then and I don’t looking back now either!

blahblahblah1654 · 30/04/2023 20:10

I hope not! I'm 38 and will be 39 when I have my second. That's not even old compared to a lot of people I know.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 30/04/2023 20:11

I had my third at 37.

MrsMenmen · 30/04/2023 20:11

Yes you should be spending your time practicing walking with a walking stick not trying for a baby. OfCOURSE it isn't 37 is a normal age to have a baby

MrsSamR · 30/04/2023 20:12

I had my second DD at 37 in October and she is absolutely perfect. I actually conceived her quicker than DD1 and felt no different in terms of age when I had her to my first (at 34). I did decide that was it for me after her and didn't fancy 'rolling the dice' a third time and my family felt complete. However, had I not met my husband/was childless at 37 or older I wouldn't hesitate to have a child then as the positives would massively override any risks! I'd only be cautious re having a 3rd child in general as for me it's a tricky number and feels a lot more than 2 for some reason!

Gunpowder · 30/04/2023 20:14

I think the bigger fear is twins tbh. I had my third at 37 and it turned out to be 3rd and 4th. It becomes more likely the older you are and the more children you have already had.

Littlebummybums · 30/04/2023 20:14

🙄

legalseagull · 30/04/2023 20:16

I think you're getting a hard time here OP. I've just turned 38 and feel too old to have a third. I know I COULD, but I already have two kids and just CBA to go through it all again and be in my 40's before they go to school.

I would feel very differently if it was my first child. I'd go for it. But I'm bloody shattered with two young kids as it is!

Abacusporttaco · 30/04/2023 20:22

Well you can get in the bin and stay there @summerfinn. I’m 37 and having my second.

Would you have advised me that my baby is going to be disabled and I’m taking too many risks?

Don’t be rude. Not everyone ‘chooses’ to wait until 41 to have a child.

Abacusporttaco · 30/04/2023 20:25

Stupid pregnancy feelings. This thread has made me a bit sad.

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 20:26

Had mine at 41 and 43. Friend had hers at 46. Sister at 45. So, no, not too old!
