High dose folic acid

We are thinking of trying for baby #2 in 6 months time, my first baby was born with a sacral dimple (can be linked to spina bifida but luckily she’s doing great and no concerns). I was told that my body doesn’t absorb enough folic acid even though I took it during my first pregnancy and was told if we were to have another child to take high dose folic acid via prescription 3 months before conception.

Has anyone taken the high dose? Is it ok to take it for a lengthy amount of time in case we don’t get pregnant straight away? I’ve made an appointment with my GP but it isn’t until the end of the month.

I took it for 3 months before starting to TTC and it took us 3 cycles to conceive. I then carried on taking it until 12 weeks and the switched to the standard "normal" dose. No adverse effects at all, I took it for about 9 months in total.

Some people aren’t able to absorb folic acid, methyl folate is the same sort of thing but much more easier absorbed. I’m surprised they haven’t recommended that instead.
