How long do you usually wait before doing a pregnancy test?

I have very recently started TTC with my partner. We have been talking about it for over a year, and we finally had sex without contraception on Wednesday and Thursday night. I realise it's far too early to be doing a test, and I do feel a bit daft for asking. I am quite excited about it all. At the moment no one other than me and my DP knows that we are trying. Do you usually just wait and see if you miss a period before you do a test? Would you ever do one before then?

I should wait till like 14dpo.... But in reality I start checking at 9dpo 😅

Twoinapod · 04/03/2023 22:39

For best results wait until period is due. The earliest you could see a positive is 9/10 days past ovulation. I got mine at 11dpo. But depends if you are tracking ovulation.

I think the best day is the day before you're due, that way test is 99% accurate and you know then to expect your period or not..

philautia · 04/03/2023 23:03

I have always waited until my period is a week late. Honestly, because it saves on the upset of an early positive leading to an early loss.

I'm quite an impatient person too!

Thanks all. I am actually already getting a bit excited just looking at the unopened tests I have in a drawer. 😁

Also, keep in mind it take up to a year to conceive for a healthy couple with no fertility issues in case you want to manage your expectations :-)

When my period is a week or two late, with my second I didn't test until I was a month late.
I would rather not know about any very early losses and I don't drink or anything anyway so there is nothing I would be doing differently.

UnseenBits · 05/03/2023 06:21

I got my first BFP at 9dpo and my second at 8dpo. I'm a serial tester. I bought Easy@Home cheapies for early testing and then when I detected a hint of a line I broke out the big guns (FRER). Are you tracking ovulation?

shattered25 · 05/03/2023 06:40

I tested 2 weeks before my period was due 😂 2 weeks after the act. Way too early. But I woke up and one of my boobs had swollen up and I was peeing all through the night so I just did it on a hunch and it was positive x

AgeOfEarthquakes · 05/03/2023 06:48

I always tried to hold out until my period was at least 2 days late.

Honoraryuce · 05/03/2023 07:10

I waited until after my period was due. It saves on tests if it's a long process.

Namechange828492 · 05/03/2023 07:12

Usually a day before AF is due although being pregnant impacts my medication needs so I do actually need to know asap!

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 05/03/2023 07:16

For random one off sex with "am I pregnant?!" Worries - people should test 2 weeks after unprotected sex.

It you know your cycle and when you ovulate - approx 12dpo+ or when your period is late.

Me too - it is hard waiting but I find I can convince myself of all sorts of symptoms and get carried away easily so I try and wait for a week post missed period. I found out at 6 weeks I was pregnant with ds.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 05/03/2023 22:55

I'd wait until you've missed a period...purely as you can get obsessed with testing AND it's expensive.

Surely 2 weeks before your period is due is around ovulation? And 2 weeks after the act (is this is sex) is when you would expect to get a positive anyway?

shattered25 · 06/03/2023 09:36

@NoMouse no idea, but it was positive and the dates correct on scan!

Twoinapod · 06/03/2023 12:42

@shattered25 do you mean 2 days before your period was due. 2 weeks before your period was due would be when you ovulate so impossible to get a positive then

I'm confused haha trying to remember back 7 months ago 😂 I thought it was 2 weeks before due, but can't be because I didn't do the deed till like 2 weeks after my period. I think all this time I've thought I had a 7 week cycle 😂😂😂 haha I know it was deffo before I was even due a period but perhaps a week before at most. Deffo 2 weeks after the act though. I've never monitored my cycle as at the time I wasn't even having them, that was the first period that year (health problems) I just tested due to feeling off never expected it to be positive x

Lcb123 · 06/03/2023 16:00

I’d wait until your period is at least couple of days late. Can get expensive and disappointing otherwise! And do set realistic expectations, up to 1 year is pretty normal even on couple with no issues
