HSG experience?

Hi everyone!

Having my first HSG in two weeks. It will be done 2 days before I ovulate and so I think I will be out of trying for that month!?

I had a CP this month so feeling really down about it all and just sad. I have stage 4 endo but conceived naturally in 2019. My cycles have got really heavy and awful since then.

If you’ve had a HSG how was it?

First thing I'll say it is everyone is different and reacts completely differently to this test.

My friend had this and said it was slightly uncomfortable but OK, another friend hardly felt a thing. I don't want to put you off but I found it pretty painful, the good thing about it is its quick you'll be in and out. Try not to worry, take some painkillers and you'll get through it. You may not feel anything at all.

fairgame84 · 15/02/2023 19:30

It was fine for me. Not painful and done in around 10 minutes. Worst thing was waddling back to the changing room trying to hold a pad between my legs.

RainbowsLemonDrop · 15/02/2023 19:35

I had one back before I conceived my little girl and I won't lie, it was fucking painful. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Definitely take some paracetamol beforehand.

Tophy124 · 15/02/2023 19:39

Thank you all!! Did you have to skip TTC that cycle?

@RainbowsLemonDrop how soon after did you conceive? I’m terrified I will be told my tubes are too damaged

I found it fine to be honest, I just asked to not be told whilst they did the local injection in to my cervix, and I didn’t even feel it! I booked the afternoon off work but would have been fine to go in

fairgame84 · 15/02/2023 19:41

I didn't have to skip that cycle, they said it was fine to continue.
I conceived the cycle afterwards.

SprinklesCake · 15/02/2023 19:45

We weren't told anything about skipping. I had no issues but didn't conceive until almost a year later via IVF. Good luck it'll be fine.

hyperemesis · 15/02/2023 19:55

I had mine under sedation so was asleep !

That was back in October and 4 weeks pregnant now I really think it helped flush my tubes through as we had been ttc #3 for a while

Pearfacebananapoop · 15/02/2023 20:10

My HSG was horrible. A nurse held my hand who was lovely. I think I was more over emotional than pain though. I got pregnant not long after so take that as a positive. Good luck.

Rtmhwales · 15/02/2023 20:30

Mine was absolutely horrible. I asked for opinions on here and everybody else seemed to have an easy go of it. So it varies massively.

You can TTC that month. They say your odds increase the first 3 cycles after but in our case nothing happened and my tubes were clear anyway.

QueenMabs · 15/02/2023 21:06

Mine was dreadful no GA or local for me. But it was over quickly I had a vaso vagal which is a common response the radiologist said hot/ sweats and would have fainted if not lying down.

The team were excellent and I cannot fault them. Had a coke and boost and drive home for a lie down. Need full day off work to recover

MargaritMargo · 15/02/2023 23:56

I found this incredibly painful, I sat and cried after. I think from shock a bit.

It’s positive that some are saying it wasn’t bad, it must be highly personal.

Mine was painful so in my experience I’d advise decent painkillers 30 mins before. Hopefully it won’t be bad though.

I did not have any blockages but I did not conceive that month either

Tophy124 · 16/02/2023 00:22

Thank you all!! My dr warned me to take 2 ibuprofen and 2 paracetamol 30 mins before. I’m so nervous for the results! I tend to find anything like a smear test very painful due to a tilted uterus and severe endo and so I’m praying I can get through it and not get any infections

I honestly found it personally painful. When they insert the tubes , that was painful, just like a bad period pain but the worst was the dye itself being injected in. It was awful , it felt like intense pressure from within like my insides were going to explode or something, only for a few moments.
What I will say tho is that it's over really quickly. I'd say 10 mins and whole thing was done. The pain only last a few minutes. I had no real pain afterwards. Maybe some very mild cramps for few hours but I was fit to walk around ect. I did bleed for a few hours after it.
I have been trying so many years and I've never got pregnant but we conceived the following cycle but sadly it didn't work out . Your apparently 30% more fertile for upto 3 months .. I definitely believe it

Tophy124 · 16/02/2023 01:52

Did you need antibiotics with the HSG?

@MK85 so sorry it didn’t work out!

OP posts:
MK85 · 16/02/2023 02:27

@Tophy124 no I was never prescribed antibiotics. It was never even mentioned to me. They did tell me about the risks AFTERWARDS that there's a risk of infection. I was just told to keep an eye for any symptoms, fever ect. My hsg was done via nhs

Nat6999 · 16/02/2023 03:21

Mine was fine, didn't feel a thing, just take a pad for afterwards as you will be leaking fluid. I took Ibuprofen & co-codamol an hour before.

QueenMabs · 16/02/2023 16:16

The antibiotics are prophylactic and not all consultants prescribe them I think? I went to a different hospital for mine and the radiographer recognised my consultant from the type of antibiotics!

Tophy124 · 16/02/2023 17:02

@QueenMabs I know my hospital won’t do them unless on the labs you showed signs of an infection but I’m super nervous now!! Lol.
