I don't know if there are any threads already started but I've just officially found out I've got PCOS this morning - I've always known deep down. Please tell me it's not all bad I'm feeling very sorry for myself.
We've been TTC for 6 months - only 3 cycles. I supposedly ovulated on CD36 (now CD43) this cycle. Gynae reckons not preg cos uterus lining would've thickened. (Had a scan this morning)

Any hints/tips on treatment/TTC?
How to deal with symptoms?

How did Posh spice and Jools Oliver manage to fall preg?

Hi - this thread is a little out of date. We've got some more information on PCOS here. MNHQ

I read on the web somewhere that they can perscribe something to help....I could be imagining this....but I definitely read about the lack of milk issue .

If I can find the article I will post it up!

dozymare · 15/03/2008 07:53

Ohhhhh am waiting in anticipation for Dungun's news....(2 positives already, she is SO pregnant ) AS for the milk issue, I BF both boys until 6 months and had an abundance of milk...didn't even know it was an issue for PCOS.....although as I have v high levels of tesosterone it is strange looking back......

Sitting patiently waiting for Dungun's news.....

fruitloop79 · 15/03/2008 07:59

DungunGirl - warmest congratulations my darling. I haven't been on mumsnet for ages and when I read you were pregnant I was so pleased. Well done!!! All your hard work paid off. How are you feeling?

Well today is my 30th birthday and I have a temperature of 39.2 and a cold. So our plans for a romantic dinner are off. DungunGirl I was getting ready to use my wish for you. But I guess you don't need it now .

I went to the GP about my leaky boobs. She apologized and said she should have checked my prolactin levels ages ago. And this could be the cause of me not being able to get pregnant. So I have a blood test on Thursday. She checked my weight again and said I was doing really well. I also mentioned to her, it's another 2.5 months until I come back to her for further help. I discussed referral to a specialist. She said she can prescribe Clomid, so it won't be a problem. But she will refer me to get me checked out first, to make sure I am a suitable candidate for Clomid. So we are getting somewhere.

DungunGirl - If you don't mind me asking a nosey question. What is your weight now and how much have you lost?

Fruitloop-Did AF turn up?

Welcome to all the newbies on this thread and a big hello to my old friends on this thread to.

xxxx

Tigerschick · 16/03/2008 16:53

Dungungirl - Wow!!! Massive congratulations to you and your family. What fantastic news to find!

Moonlit - Happy Birthday! Sorry you feel so rotten but hop eyou are able to enjoy your birthday at least a little bit.

Hope everyone else is OK. I'm going to ring my specialist in the morning for a prescription of progesterone ... we'll see.

Moonlit · 16/03/2008 17:06

Hey Tigerschick - Thank you for the birthday wishes. Good luck for your appointment tomorrow.

scoobyd00 · 16/03/2008 17:50

I've just spent the last hour reading all the messages in this thread and am now slightly reassured about PCOS but still feel a little lost.

I am 29 years old and came off the pill a year ago and have been TTC since then. I have yet to have a period and so went to see my GP. I have had blood tests and an internal ultrasound which confirmed that I'm not ovulating and have PCOS. I was devasted when I was told as I've always been very fit and healthy, exercising daily and maintaining a healthy weight. For the last couple of weeks I've been really depressed and feel completely out of control.

Reading the messages has helped me realise that it's not a hopeless situation and that even though getting pregnant may take a while and a helping hand, it's not impossible. I've been referred to a gynae but am still awaiting a date. In the meantime is there anything I can do? Weight loss seems to be the big issue, but I'm not over-weight. Will loosing a bit of weight help anyway as I'm quite prepared to do so?

I'm also concerned about the possible link between PCOS and diabetes. Do must people have an insulin resistant blood test as well, as this is something I've not yet had?

Also if I haven't had a period at all for a year, does that put me at greater risk of ovarian cancer? My GP wasn't great at answering my questions and recommended I ask the gynae instead.

My husband's been really understanding through all of this but I keep snapping at him, even though it's not his fault. Even the dog's been getting it in the neck!

Any additional advice would be greatfuly received.

Rizzo2005 · 16/03/2008 18:07

I ahven't read all the posts, just the first one, but just wanted to say that i have PCOS. I have been pregnant 3 times. The first time took 3 months, next time the 1st month and the 3rd time it took 3 months. It doesn't necessarily mean taking a long time!

fruitloop79 · 16/03/2008 18:08

Hey dungun how's it going? has it sunk in yet?

moonlit Happy Birthday!
No AF hasnt turned up yet. I'm supposedly 13dpo now. Neg test yesterday. My temp is taking a nose dive though and is on the coverline now so I reckon PCOS was just making fun of me as usual . It was very difficult not to get excited but I've always been aware that these post ov temps could have been a red herring.

scoobyd00 welcome to this lovely thread. Sorry I cant answer your questions but I'm sure someone will be along soon who will be a lot more help. Attila is very good

Hey Scooby - I am PG with number 3 despite suffering from PCOS and Underactive Thyroid so yes there is hope...I read absolutely everything there was to read on PCOS and changed my diet to low GI. This seemed to help - also try and eat organic if you can.....My consultant told me this and I basically have come to the following conclusion as to why......I was on pill for 10 years, ie having a period controlled by hormones every 28 days. I then came off the pill and suffered MC and difficulty getting PG. I was then diagnosed with PCOS and UAT which are basically hormone related illnesses. Equally, growing up my mum gave us non organic meat. (Which has been proven in recent years to contain very high doses of hormones, look how quickly chickens grow due to hormone stimulant) I am not saying this is why I have what I do, but there must be a link and as the govenment have legislised the use of Growth hormones in animals for the last 20 years is it a coincidence that lots of people have problems with hormone realted illnesses? Eg Girls as young as 6 starting their periods? Basically, if this was proven the government would be sued for billions.....hence why i think there is a huge cover up and a huge increase in hormone related illnesses....

ANy link? You decide??

Anyway, that is my theory, right or wrong I eat organic where I can and also for the DC.

AS for helping your PCOS, it took me a long time to concieve DC1 but the minute my consultant put me on metformin I fell with DC2 and this pregnancy within 6 months.....

Main thing is there is a huge support on here and you just need to stay strong, it isn't easy and it isn't fair but if you can live in hope you will get there.........

sorry for appalling grammar and spelling but didn't check..hope it makes sense!

DungunGirl · 17/03/2008 12:13

Hi guys!!!

fruitloop
No it still hasn't really sunk in yet! I am still trying to organise a blood test to confirm it for sure! I thought I could get one today but it seems that they are fully booked till next week!

So I am waiting to hear from the GP and hope he does me a slip to get it down on the blood clinic.

moonlit
I lost almost 10 kilos in total. I am still heavy at 95 kgs...

Thanks for the congrats!

Misha75 · 17/03/2008 16:35

Hi Ladies,

After many terrible years of suffering from hairloss around the scalp and increased facial hair, I was finally diagnosed with PCO. The only reason I was finally diagnosed is when I started trying to conceive. Strangely enough all my previous blood tests over the past decade, never detected the PCOS, however a recent ultra sound did. So word of warning, if you're suffering from PCO like symptoms and the doctor tell you your blood results show you as normal, don't accept it as gospel. I would advise you ask for an ultra sound just to make sure. If I had know this, it would saved me thousands on hair loss treatments and hours of pain. I have been put on Metformin for a few months now, which has not helped me to conceive, and currently waiting to be refered to a fertility clinic to possibly start on Clomid. The problem is I am not ovulating, inspite of getting a period every 38 days. So we'll wait and see what happens. I have almost given up on the NHS and have decided to go private due to the extremely lengthy processes.

dozymare · 17/03/2008 16:41

Hi Misha - don'[t give up hope,,,,,,,I am PG with 3rd child and concieved whilst on Metformin..It takes a while for your body to adjust so just go with it........Of course go private if you want (I did) but you need to give these things a good chance...also are you following any specific diet??

Misha75 · 17/03/2008 16:55

Hey,

No I am not following any specific diet, althoug I do try to eat healthily and I have been taking Pregnacare for a few months. I also just started Acupuncture last wee (thanks to a thread I read on Mumsnet). I am trying not to get frustrated with it all, all the waiting drives you mad. So glad to hear positive news Dozeymare. Did you conceive straight away?

dozymare · 17/03/2008 17:30

I changed my diet to low GI and againt his seemed to help......I know lots of people who have concieved on Metformin, it just takes everybodys metabolism different times to adjust...what dosage are you on??
