Anyone on Metformin for PCOS - need advice

Hello, I'm on metofrmin for pcos but teh pharmacist said not to take it if I'm pregnant. I thought I was last month so stopped it but turns out I wasn't. Shall Ijust start taking it again and when should I stop - not until I have a BFP? IN which case if I do conceive will it harm the baby in the two weeks between conception and knowing?

I am taking metformin also for PCOS. Yes it's true you shouldn't take it if you are pregnant. I thought I was pregnant last November and stopped taking it. A trip to the Doctors proved I wasn't. I was slightly heartbroken. But anyway my Doctor said it's not too harmful in the initial stages of pregnancy if you are unaware you are pregnant. However, if I feel I am having symptoms of being pregnant I just stop taking it.

Are you taking it to get pregnant or for weight loss?

That's good to know. So I will take it until I get a BFP (fingers crossed) and then stop once I do?

Am taking it for both. Have regular periods but am overweight (about 14 stone) and my consultant said I should carry on taking it even though periods are regular because it means I hit the ground running in trying to conceive.

Hi yellow flowers, I am now 35+4 with my 2nd baby, both times I have taken met until 12weeks pg, different drs have different ideas on this so I would check it with them hth

By the way I am the same. I was 13 stone when I started Metformin. I am now down to 12 stone, which taken 2 months. My periods are regular and TTC Number 2 has'nt been as easy.

With my dd I got pregnant straight away. However, I did go on a diet and weigh only 9.5 stone before I got pregnant. Hence, why after numerous tests by doctor says it's my weight and the huge stress caused by work stuff (long story).

I've just discovered I have PCOS. Found out this morning. Is this what I should be demanding from my GP then? or Clomid? My weight's fine (well, I could lose a couple pounds) but desperately TTC!

I had to get mine from the specialist - my GP wasn't comfortable giving it to me. The specialist told me that I should take Metformin and go back after a year if not conceived at which point they will think about clomid.

You will be suprised how loosing a few pounds can affect your chances of getting pregnant. One of my friends who was TTC number 1, was not having any luck. I was convinced she had PCOS, so I told her to convince her doctor to give her a scan. And guess what! She had PCOS. She was not overweight, but I suggested she loose some weight, the same way I did (no pasta, rice, bread, potatoes etc) no carbs basically. In a month she lost 1 stone and soon after got pregnant, and her DS was born in July 2007.

You need to be trying for a year before a GP is prepared to prescribe you Clomid. Well that's what I have been told. Hence, Clomid here I come!

Just wanted to add my 10pence worth on clomid.
In my case the GP's would not prescribe...onl the consultant/fertility doctor at the hospital has the power to perscribe.

just start taking it again. I spoke to my gynae about the risks of metformin during pregnancy and she said it wasn;t proven to do any harm and that plenty of diabetic had obviously taken it before they knew they were prgnant with no known problems. The advice not to take during pregnancy is just a precaution because (like lots of drugs) it hasn't been cleared to take during pregnancy.

In fact there is one theroy that continuing to tkae it for first 3 months can reduce risk of miscarriage but I'm not sure anyone has been brave enough to test that!
