TTC using OPKs - how long has it taken others out there using these?

I am just a bit confused about how long I should allow TTC before investigating with GP as I am now 38.

I know many people say it can take up to a year but that may be without TTC too hard IYKWIM? I am interested to know how long it has taken people who have used OPKs as I imagine this would make a huge difference?

We conceived DD quite easily when I was 36 without really trying at all but as I am getting older am keen to take it a bit more seriously this time!

Thanks

With regards to the question posed in your first sentence its six months.

OPK's are beset with problems anyway particularly if the menstrual cycle is irregular - they are best avoided. OPK's work on two misleading principles - namely that a rise in LH is immediately followed by ovulation (not true) and that women only have one rise in LH every month (again not true).

Generally speaking, fertility does decline with age.

Thanks Atilla.

Anyone out there who has experience of using OPKs when TTC though?

Hi doghouse
yeah, I've been using them.
Got my 1st OPK BFP last week and got all excited although like Attila says, I'm quite sceptical because I have huge cycles! I didn't have any other symptoms of ovulation but BD'd like mad anyway. I figures that as I haven't had a positive OPK before it must be right otherwise it would have happened a few times. I'm probably wrong but I should find out if I have ov'd at my scan on Monday morning. If I have then I have faith in OPK's, if not it's out the window!
Just give them a go, see what happens

thanks fruitloop - will look out for your news following monday's scan then!

I had a with an OPK yesterday and, like you, have long cycles and had tested loads of times before this cycle with no . So, again like you, have been BDing like mad since!

This is our 1st cycle using OPKs though so am trying to be realistic! But it's hard!

Hi Doghouse

Dont know if this is of any help but I'm 36 and went to GP to advise was trying in nov/dec. She said that guidance for GPs is 1 year of trying (presumably NICE guidance) but that because of my age wait 6 months and she would then refer us both.

I dont have any children but I thought this was encouraging. I live in quite a rural area, nearest hosp is Frimley Park in surrey - dont know if any of this is helpful but I would push GP for referal if you can after 6 months?

Hope this helps

Siurana
