Do you take a test alone?

First time TTC and I am 39 so not hopefully it's going to happen right away. I've taken a few tests in the past but it's always been a 'I hope I'm not pregnant' mindset but now of course that's changed.

Did you test for the first time on your own and then tell your partner the results? Did take the test and wait for the results together? I feel like it's something we should do together but then I also don't want to get his hopes up if it's a negative.

Just interested in what others have done, what they think works best.

I did it alone each time so I could handle my own reaction before telling him

ChloeN · 17/11/2022 15:40

@AccidentallyRunToWindsor I did all of mine alone when it’s been positive and negative and I’m glad I did! It would of been lovely to find out together but it was also really nice to surprise him after as he had no idea I was taking the test in the first place xx

ChessieDarling · 17/11/2022 15:43

I did, which I would do again but not in the same circumstances, if that makes sense. I only did a test to rule it out as we were due to start fertility treatments the next day having been ttc for nearly two years, and I’d thrown up for apparently no reason the night before, so I rushed them, did them as I was getting ready for work (as was DH) and so I was just staring at the positive tests when DH knocked and said he was desperate for a wee and would I hurry up as we were both to be late! It was still the most amazing, overwhelming moment, of course, but I’d have loved to have made it a little less ‘oh wow, this is amazing, okay bye darling, off to work’ 😂

Together the first time (IVF so we were sure on dates and didn't test until 19dpo on the advice of the clinic, so we were convinced the results would be accurate either way). Alone the second time as DS was around and I didn't want him to see my reaction.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 17/11/2022 15:46

Thanks all. Have been dying to take a test today but we are out tonight so don't really have time and then DP's son is here this weekend so won't be the right time to do it now until Monday.

I did alone. Until, for some weird reason (5 years after first started trying) i brought one out to the kitchen where he was. It was positive. I didnt believe it, made him go to the shop and buy 5 more.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/11/2022 16:25

I did that many it would've been stupid to do together. The only time it's ever been positive in twenty years of trying was when he had gone on a really long bike ride and I only did it because the expiry date was that day! I had no idea it would be positive 😁

ChocoFudge · 17/11/2022 16:36

Tested alone both times. First time I was convinced it would be negative (I was wrong), second time I was pretty sure it would be positive (I was right).

MilkToastHoney · 17/11/2022 17:06

Two were alone but more circumstantial-think DH was just out one on and one I bought a test on my dinner in work then did in work toilets.
Third DH was in bathroom when I did so was there. I did more or less know anyway all times though so was just like I’ll test to be sure. Never really thought about whether to test while DH was there or not, just did as soon as got a test.

Onnabugeisha · 17/11/2022 17:20

Always alone. But it doesn’t take hardly any time? You wee on a stick, set it to one side and pop back after a few minutes.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/11/2022 17:29

I've been in the TTC trenches for a very long time and my husband and I get up at the same time. I can't hold my pee until he gets out of the shower so we use the bathroom together.

Unfortunately none of my (rare) BFPs have been surprises for him.

MilkToastHoney · 17/11/2022 17:31

Just seen your post about not having time - it’s literally the same amount time as having a wee!
I’d just do tonight or when your DSS is staying, if you had other kids you’d have to test while they were in the house😀

PandaOrLion · 17/11/2022 17:37

We knew I would take a test as I was so emotional and about to stay away so wanted to know if I could drink or not! I took it one night and had a faint positive so told him I’d take a test in the morning. I woke up before him, unintentionally but took the second test then, darker positive and then told him when he woke up. So technically I took two tests alone!

inthemarblejar · 17/11/2022 18:04

Every one I ever did I did alone! I wanted to find out by myself. I'm not sure why. First one I was bursting to tell DH and I had to wait until he got home from work 12 hours later as I wanted to tell him face time face.

Second time I didn't tell DH until the next day, like 24 hours later. I was just processing it I think. It happened within two weeks of starting to try and I only took the test on the off chance. Was super early.

We were trying both times, so not like it was unwelcome news. He was delighted, so was I. It was just a little moment just for me I guess, before I shared it with anyone.

Which sounds very selfish doesn't it! Ah well. Many years later I don't regret it.

pimlicoanna · 17/11/2022 18:17

Tested alone in the loos at Waterloo station after buying a test at the station

sjxoxo · 17/11/2022 18:22

I did it alone but shouted him to come to the bathroom asap as I couldn’t believe it. Then I did about 20 more tests over the next two weeks 🤣 DS now 10 months!
Best of luck xxx

Tested yesterday and was negative so back to the drawing board!

Sorry to hear the test was negative. How many DPO are you? maybe it's still too early to test?

I have always tested alone first. The last time I tested (which ended in MC), it was very faint and I asked DH to check. All he managed to respond was 'What time is it?'. I woke up very early (before 6 pm) to test that day 😂
