Prolactin raised

Hi- just wondering if anyone has experience with high prolactin? I went for day 21 tests and all was normal apart from prolactin ( 999). I had my bloods repeated on day 3 and it had fallen to 520. This is obviously still higher than the normal range- but it had fallen quite significantly. I am now waiting on a third prolactin test result. So if anyone has any experience of this- have they been referred to an endocrinologist? Or if you know of any reasons why it may vary so much? Thanks

Hey, my levels are normal now but still no luck :( xx

Ah my levels are still over 2000 been referred for mri but no doubt the wait will be months 😨

My levels were constantly at the 1,000-900 range.

I have subclinical hypothyroid and taking levothyroxine has dropped it to about 240. So it can be helpful to have your thyroid checked too.

@Lauralozzle how did you figure out it was that? I'm waiting for mri atm to see if it's a tumour on my pituitary gland.. did this stop you being able to conceive?

@dall9 I’m starting IVF so still haven’t conceived. Because my thyroid was consistently between 4.5-9.1 I basically begged my GP for thyroid meds because IVF doctors said it needed to be below 2.5 so ended up with tiny dose if thyroid meds. I was subclinical based on blood results so ordinarily they wouldn’t have medicated yet.

GP was still concerned about prolactin so referred me to endocrinologist anyway (after a year of having consistently high results). Had bloods rechecked after 6 weeks for thyroid, asked for prolactin tests again and both had gone down since taking thyroxine. By the time I eventually saw endocrinologist he said it’s unusual but thyroid meds have dropped it massively so it’s related to underactive thyroid. Never ended up having to have mri or anything, just need to keep on top of thyroid levels.

I’ll be on thyroxine now for life but I’m happy my levels are normal now so clearly needed it!

@dall9 Hi I’m also in a similar situation did you have the MRI scan ? Also was it done with a contrast dye or without ? And was the MRI scan off your whole head and looked at everything/ the whole brain or was it just of the pituitary gland ?

@Lulie77777 hi just came across your comment was wondering what it means ? Had a quick google but thought I would also ask . What is the difference between monomeric or macroprolactin ? I had some tests and my prolactin is : Prolactin mU/L: 875 mU/L ( The Range: 100 - 550 mU/L) and then the lab I’m assuming done this . Monomeric Prolactin mU/L : 388 mU/L ( The Range:< 420 mU/L) I wanted to recheck my levels but my GP just fobbed me off and said No , I do get migraines so was so worried when I had a google and it says extreme things etc & my GP is no help at all.

@Lauralozzle hey what test helped you find out about your thyroid issues was it TSH blood work or did you do a full thyroid panel my GP is not much help so thought I would ask .

Lauralozzle · 15/05/2024 18:52

@watermelonsugarmum Hi, I believe it was TSH and T4 test. They tested TSH as part of my fertility referral.

Deedoo · 15/12/2024 13:21
