I am ovulating right now - is it too late to get pg if we do the deed tonight?

OK - am a regular, but have namechanged as I have a few RL friends on here to whom I have posed the same Q, and I don't want them to know my MN nickname.

Anyway... I have ovulation pain right now - and have had since mid-afternoon. I think I'm right in saying that an egg lives for about 12 hours, and that it takes 12 hours for sperm to reach the fallopian tubes. So my question is, if we have sex tonight, will it be too late? Does the ovulation pain mean that the egg has been released? Or is it about to be released?

OQ, I saw the egg that made my DS1 on ultrasound scan - fertility treatment
got straight to it that evening
baby boy 8 and half months later

Go for it, but it will be a boy

We are trying for a boy, ovulation day is the perfect day to make a boy

Good luck

So how long does an egg live for? Is it 12 hours?

And how long does it take the little swimmers to get there?

OP posts:

I think the egg live for 5 days but must be fertilised in the first 24 hrs for a successful pg to result.

Ovum patent for 24 hours, sperm for 5-7 days. Good luck!

Thanks all - my fingers are now as tightly crossed as my legs were last night after the sacred sperm had been deposited!

BTW OvulationQuestion do you mind if I ask how you knew you were ovulating?

Good luck btw xxx

OvulationQuestion · 28/01/2008 10:25

hackneybird - I knew I was ovulating because of the pain I was experiencing. Every month I get a dullish ache low down in either my left or right hand side. Years ago I wasn't sure what it was, but gradually came to understand that it is mittelschmerz.

For me, it usually lasts about 4 to 8 hours and I can feel whether the egg is being released from either the left or right ovary.

You should be OK. Eggs 'live' for 24 hours. Good luck! and hopefully you'll have some good news in 2 weeks time!

OvulationQuestion · 11/02/2008 13:22

Well, it didn't work . AF came today. Thanks for all the good wishes though .

Sorry to hear that.

I've only just read this thread and you were probably half a day too late.

Once the egg is released the sperm needs to be there waiting to greet it which is why it's better to be having sex in the days leading up to OV rather than the day itself.

Better luck for next month.
