Clomid - twins?

toadinthehole1 · 15/09/2022 18:04

I’ve just been prescribed clomid after not having a period 10 months after stopping the pill… doctor said to start taking it tomorrow.

I had very very light spotting yesterday randomly for 1 day which hasn’t happened before… and am now worried it was ovulation, and if I take clomid I’ll risk twins?

I did an opk this morning which was negative though and last week when the doctor did an internal scan he said my lining was thin (as expected).

Is the risk significantly increased with clomid of having twins?

It is raised but not significantly. I also don't think it matters if you are ovulating already but usually you'd start clomid on cycle day 2 eg the day after your period starts

Usually they'd prescribe something like norethisterone to induce a period before they start you on ovulation induction meds

Tried that and it didn’t work, consultant said it usually doesn’t work to be honest!

Not really for the majority of people. The only person I know who had multiples on clomid had three eggs, all implanted and one split to make identical twins so now she has quads Blush

Weird how different people and area policies can be @toadinthehole1 - my fertility clinic (NHS) use it for all unsuccessful letrozole cycles and its always worked! Mine was 5mg per day for 7 days.

Ronnii · 15/09/2022 23:17

As pp said it's not significant increase. Top of my head I thinks it's around 10%

I'm not sure what clomid does if you have no cycle.

I had no period for 14 months after the pill. Hopefully the spotting is a sign of your cycle coming back.

I took clomid from day 2, I did release two eggs as an early scan showed but by 13w was just one baby.

I also learnt being older can increase having twins aswel!

Strange! I was at a Nuffield health hospital, he said it just proves you “can” bleed. I’m sure if I waited long enough they’d return naturally, im just impatient.

It will hopefully make me ovulate still, nothing wrong with my ovaries / hormones etc they just seem to be lazy after coming off the pill! 14 months is a long time, but I’m sure mine would also return naturally if I left it too.

oh really… I am a twin already, although identical so shouldn’t have the “twin gene” want to reduce all risk 😂

@toadinthehole1 did you have regular cycles before being on the pill? I had a similar situation coming off the pill and have since found out I have an ovulation disorder and it's not going to go back to normal (don't meet PCOS criteria though).

Fertility clinics have to keep the twin rate low so I'm not sure it's as high as 10%. Is it being monitored (are they doing scans and bloods to monitor its efficacy)? If not, it risks underdosing (and it doesn't work, you can only try clomid for a limited amount of time) or overdosing (OHSS risk and increased multiples risk)

Yes regular as far as I remember, I’ve had internal, external ultrasounds and blood tests which are normal. I did come off the pill about 6 years ago and had a year of no periods then too so think it’s my ‘normal’.

I am being monitored I believe yes as I am starting clomid today and going back to see the consultant on the 28th

Oh and I’m on 5mg, he is starting me on a low dose as I mentioned my concern of twins 😂

Oh wow! She deffo has her hands full there. Do you if she had a healthy pregnancy? I know having multiples in a pregnancy increases risks involved etc.

My Dr has said i can start clomid but my maternal grandma had fraternal twins (my aunt and uncle) so pretty scared of ending up with anything more than twins lol.

MrsCharlesFrere · 23/05/2023 00:48

I had twins after taking clomid. I was told there was a "moderate" risk of it happening but was happy to try anything!

Fraaahnces · 23/05/2023 01:33

Clovis worked incredibly well for me. I conceived twins while it was still in my handbag. Must be very potent stuff!

Fraaahnces · 23/05/2023 15:21

**CLOMID, sorry!

toadinthehole1 · 23/05/2023 15:44

It worked for me.. I’m 36 weeks pregnant today 😉

Not with twins! That’s why they do the scan before giving you the go ahead.
