Miscarriage or Ectopic? Terrified

I thought we'd conceived our rainbow baby this month after a recent D&C but sadly a week after my BFP I had very heavy period like bleeding for 4 days. I came to terms I'd very likely miscarried.

I had a scan on Monday to confirm (I should've been about 5w) and they didn't see anything on the scan. Lining measuring was 4.5mm.

They said I likely miscarried but wanted to take bloods to rule out ectopic.
Monday bloods: HCG 397 Progesterone 26
Wednesday bloods: HCG 450 Progesterone 19

They have asked me to come in for repeat bloods on Friday and will scan again if I like. I am terrified that it could be an ectopic. I've never hoped for a complete miscarriage before but the thought of ectopic and potential treatments has me really hoping it was a miscarriage and HCG is just taking its time to adjust. I can't sleep, eat, parent my 2yo son properly. I'm just in a zombie state of fear.

Has anyone had similar slow rising levels and what did it turn out to be?

TIA xx

Please please ring your GP and explain your fears and get a medical perspective.

Hi @MeganMama28 I know it's probably not what you want to hear but I had a very similar experience and mine did turn out to be an ectopic. I was very looked after though, I needed surgery but I was further along when diagnosed - you may not need it. I recovered from the surgery quickly (it was keyhole) and I'm currently pregnant (from the side I lost my Fallopian tube). I was told if I had sharp one sided pain in the meantime (while waiting for another scan to see where it was exactly, after rising hcg) to go straight to A&E. As it was I did have to do this but they admitted me straight away and got me scanned, new bloods and in line for surgery. I was home the next day. Hope you get some answers soon.

@MeganMama28 so sorry to hear what you’re going through, it’s awful :(
i had a pretty similar experience recently, had an MVA for a MMC and then suddenly started bleeding at 6 weeks with what I hoped was our rainbow baby. When I went in to get scanned they said they couldn’t see anything, so either I’d had the complete miscarriage or was ectopic. I know what to mean about suddenly hoping for a complete miscarriage :(

While they were scanning me I asked them to double check my Fallopian tubes, which the sonograph did and they were pretty confident at that point there was no pregnancy located there. Were they able to scan yours? If not, I would push for another scan and asked for them to get checked. It gave me more piece of mind.
The nurse also told me that your lining is usually above 8 for pregnancy and lining stays thick for ectopic too. Mine had decreased to 3.6, so again this was suggestion that it was likely not ectopic.
However my bloods and progesterone results (v low) did confirm that it was not ectopic, so given yours have risen a bit I would 100% get more bloods done and also take yourself to A&E if you get any pain.
So sorry you are going through this x

@Endlesslypatient82 when I phoned my GP they said to just update them with what EPU say as they're experts. They were kind and supportive but couldn't tell me much more.

@Jericha I haven't had any sharp pain so hoping it's not but trying to prepare myself that it may be. Did they say how long after surgery you could TTC again?

@Talia11 they double checked my tubes too and couldn't see anything at all. At that point I didn't even think about eptopic but the hcg not dropping yet has made me fear and google the worst. Very strange that only my progesterone has dropped so far. I guess I can take some comfort in having thinner lining at 4.5mm which hopefully signifies MC and period may be on its way instead.

I was told have a month off after surgery and let my period come back first. I think if you are treated with methotrexate it's something like 3 months as it can hang around in your system and be dangerous to a new pregnancy.

MeganMama28 · 25/08/2022 12:56

@Jericha thank you, I have no idea which option I would go for if it is the case but I'm glad to hear you were well looked after. Big congratulations on your pregnancy too 💕

Thank you @MeganMama28 if you do have an ectopic they'll take care of you and give you all the information you need about treatment. Look after yourself and I hope you get some answers soon.

@MeganMama28 hope everyone went ok. Could you please let us know the outcome? I'm currently going through something similar. Thank you.

None of my ectopic pregnancy symptoms were typical, so that made it hard for them to diagnose. They never really needed to double check bloods with me, but ectopic pregnancy can be serious, so it’s good they are keeping an eye on you.

I was told not to try for a baby for 2 months post surgery. It’s 1 month post surgery and I don’t think I could have sex yet anyway! no sign of AF either.

But hope you got some answers OP
