Mthfr mutation

elzober · 01/08/2022 12:35

I've just found out I have the heterozygous MTHFR mutation through private testing after a couple of losses.

Everything else was fine and I've had green light to TTC again. The Dr suggested I take methylfolate. Any brand recommendations or other recommendations for supplements or things to do in this situation?

I'll take aspirin in next pregnancy and possibly cleaned although Dr said that might be overkill

I was recommended 5mg of folic acid but reading that it's effectively useless.

What dose of folate were you prescribed?

Hi ladies. Does anyone have any further advice or updates with this? I found out after my 3rd miscarriage that I am carrying 2 copies of the gene. I was prescribed aspirin and 5mg folic acid, and given the green light to try again. Unfortunately my 4th pregnancy has also ended in a loss. I have now been told next time to try the blood thinning injections. Does anyone have an successful pregnancy stories from this gene? Many thanks x

@Sophiey11 I'm now 20 weeks pregnant on baby aspirin and methylfolate. Do not take folic acid - it's a synthetic chemical our bodies cannot process. You need to buy methylfolate instead. Still gives yo what you need but in a more processable form. Need to get folic acid out of system as it can elevate something called homocysteine level which can contribute to miscarriage

Hello. I'll join with a question after several miscarriages myself. At what stage did you miscarriage? Did you get to see an embryo?

I had missed miscarriages and no embryo. They gave me some tests but mthfr is not one of them and I was wondering if I should ask for it or it is only relevant for miscarriages more further away in the pregnancy.

Thank you. And best wishes for your pregnancy ❤️

@Ding1 sorry to hear you are also going though this.
I had 2 MC at 6 weeks. Has positive pregnancy tests but no scan etc as so early. In September I went to my 12 weeks scan, and was told there was no heart beat. I had regular scans throughout and at 10 weeks all was fine. Baby was fine, good heartbeat etc, but baby had passed at 11+4. In January I then had a chemical at 5 weeks. I had a positive pregnancy test, but no scan to confirm. Ini HCG blood tests.
After the 3rd I paid privately for tests and the MTHFR gene is all that flagged up. I have both copies. I took aspirin as advised on pregnancy number 4, but that still ended up in a loss. I am going to try the injections next time xx

Thank you, @Sophiey11

Hope it works well for you with the injections and you'll have your baby soon, happy and healthy.

@elzober Hi where did you get the MTHFR gene test done pls ? I’m struggling to find any places that do this test .

Toastandmarmiteandtea · 20/07/2024 16:14

I am homozygous mthfr and carried two babies to term using clexane and aspirin and 5mg folic acid. Also progesterone injections.
