Lump in my groin area (swolllen nodes?)

beaniesteve · 18/01/2008 15:10

I have booked an appointment with my doctor for Tuesday morning but I need some advice.

While having a bath a week or so ago I noticed what looks like a lump (pea sized) on my left side kinda in the crease between the top of my thigh and my bits (For want of a better word). I checked the other side and there's a smaller insignificant lump on the other side too.

Looks like for some reason a node or something has become inflamed.

Is it possible I have Fibroids?
I have had a really heavy period, which in total lasted about 8-9 days.

I'm really scared about this as I don't know how it might effect my fertility. I'm not overweight and I don't have any other symptoms though I have had a couple of bouts of Cystitis in the last 6 months.

I'm hoping it's just a way of my body fighting some infection.

Can anyone give me some advice or share their experiences?

thanks

Have you noticed it again in the last week? It is likely to be a swollen lymph node and can be a sign that you are ovulating, how long was it since your period that you noticed it? If it was because you were ovulating it would go down again after a couple of days. Otherwise lymph nodes can swell up in response to infection.
Hope this helps, will try and find some links with more info.

This is the best I've found I'm afraid, about halfway down under management the last point is about lymph node swelling.

Thanks I had my period on 8th of Jan but it didn't stop until 15th. I noticed it first while I had my period, but then noticed it about 4 days later (on wednesday Morning) and it seemed bigger.

I have had a bit of a rash which I assumed was from moisture due to the fact that I was using Towels for most of my period as it was so heavy.

I guess I have an infection of some kind

will read the link, thank you.

No idea about Fibrods etc so no good on advice but from personal experience mine swell in my groin (and else where) when I am run down and/or I am fighting an infection, so it maybe nothing at all. Still worth getting it checked.

beaniesteve · 18/01/2008 15:51

And thanks for giving me a more positive thought - that maybe I am ovulating
not sure if it could be true in this case with my periods only just finishing but it's always a possibility I guess.

I noticed mine come up when I was ovulating, the weird thing is it correlates to the side from which the egg is being released! I only noticed it once though so doesn't always happen.
It could be that you are ovulating or it could be related to the rash, the lymph nodes in your groin are just like the ones in your neck that come up when you get a cold or are run down.

beaniesteve · 18/01/2008 16:36

I guess I am just freaked out because I've never had it before and I am so aware of all my body's changes at the moment.

The first time I noticed one come up I was freaked out as well!
If it's still swollen I'd still go to the doctor if I were you, they might be able to treat the infection, plus I'm not a doctor and it could be something else.
Hopefully it is a sign of ovulation!

bubblagirl · 18/01/2008 17:00

i had lumps there and it turne dout to be varicus vein but do get it checked

beaniesteve · 21/01/2008 11:48

I've been to the docs, managed to change my appointment and see a woman doctor.
She's not given me anything for the swelling but I know they don't like prescribing antibiotics. She examined me and has said I am a bit swollen and I have to go back and see the nurse on Thursday, plus she's going to arrange for me to have a scan. They are going to test for STD's too cos I asked seeing as I want kids.

so - no diagnosis but I feel better.

Hello! I do lymphatic drainage. Lymph nodes in the groin area are very easy to see if they get slightly blocked for whatever reason. Its more likely than not nothing to worry about at all but good you're getting it checked. If your diet contains a lot of mucus producing food this can cause nodes to swell. Also the groin nodes swell if there is a lot of tension in the lower back or if you're sitting for a long time.

beaniesteve · 21/01/2008 15:19

thanks
I know (from scaring myself on the internet) that swolen nodes are usually a sign of fighting off an infection so I am hoping it's just this.

I do drink a lot of milk, would that be a mucus producing food?

Anyhoo... am feeling so much better about it now.

Hello! Yes milk is very mucus producing so that could easily thicken up your lymph. Drink a bit more water to compensate if you love milk!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/01/2008 17:15

i had them on both sides - if they are lymph nodes they run in like a chain effect down each side

i get them often when run down and they were pronounced when i had shingles

i think you should go to gp - i was referred for mine

beaniesteve · 23/01/2008 17:27

Hiya - have been to the GP on Monday
I'm back in tomorrow for some swabs and she's booking me in for a scan whenever they can fit me in. I'm not entirely sure why I need the scan, she did ask me about a scan I had a few years ago (With another practice) which I had when I had some unexplained pain and clicking below my left ribcage. That scan came back with no problems.

I know it's silly of me but I keep wondering 'am I pregnant!?' Only I had a period on the 7th which lasted til about 15th (very long) and I did a pregnancy test on the 15 and it was negative.

I'm constipated, tired etc.

generally I recon I am run-down.

just bumping this incase anyone else has had this? Have had the lump for almost a month now. My swabs came back clear but I have not had a date for the scan yet.

I have the doctors again on Tuesday... do you think I should ask for blood tests?

WowOoo · 01/02/2008 13:29

Have had lumps like this for years on and off. Been to docs - either infected hair follicle or swollen nodes due to infection, being run down. Also find if I wear knickers that are too tight they tend to come up. Always wear oversize knickers now -far more comfy!

beaniesteve · 01/02/2008 13:46

how long do yours stay for though? I only have one on one side, not painful and not an ingrowing hair. All the stuff I have read has said they should go down within 2 weeks if it's to do with an infection.

OP posts:
WowOoo · 01/02/2008 13:50

I think they usually do go down after 2 weeks or so, but remember have had them for longer. maybe you've been run down for long time? have been to docs so many times and they never seem partic concerned. My fertility has not been affected at all, so try not to worry too much and ask for whatever tests will put your mind at ease.

beaniesteve · 01/02/2008 13:55

Thanks WowOoo

Hello,

Just been to the docs. They have decided to take some blood for tests. I am guessing just liver functions/blood cells or whatever.

A bonus is that they have said they will test my hormone levels while they're at it

All good I hope.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM..

So - I finally got an appointment for a scan. 27th may! Over 5 months from when I first found it.
