Before or during ovulation or both?

If it's a choice, before! Better to have spent waiting there for the egg, as it takes sperm a few hours to reach the Fallopian tubes, and it's easy to time it wrong.

But before and during is best, to up your chances.

*Sperm waiting, not spent.

Before and during. Your odds are best if you dtd at O-2 and O-1.

Don't rely on an app though, it has no idea when you're ovulating...

Don't just rely on apps, OP. Obviously they can't know exactly when you ovulate! If you really want to know, you need to use OPKs and/or temping.

Fertility doctor told us - as often as possible in the window. I've just read first thing in the morning is better as well.

Whats opks?

Ovulation Predictor Kit.

They're strips that you pee on daily or twice daily, they tell you exactly when your Luteinising Hormone (LH) is surging. Usually your ovary releases an egg 12-36 hours after this surge.

You can get big packs of them cheaply off Amazon. That way you know exactly when you are ovulating. (Measuring Basal Body Temperature will actually confirm ovulation but only after the fact)

If your app assumes "standard" ovulation on Cycle Day 14 (CD14) but you actually ovulate earlier, or much later, then you'll potentially miss the optimal DTD time.

Noodle20 · 29/06/2022 15:27

Are there any in particular you recommend to get from Amazon pls? When do you start using these in your cycle?

Flederjo · 29/06/2022 15:37

Easy@home and MomMed are decent.

If you've never used them before, I would start a couple of days after your period has finished. Also better to pee in a container and dip the strips since you usually have to dip them for 10-15 seconds.

On these tests there will always be a faint second line due to underlying levels of LH in the body. A positive strip is when the test line is as dark as, or darker than, the control line (so slightly different to a pregnancy test....). When you see that very dark test line, that means ovulation is likely to occur in the next day or so.

@Flederjo that's super helpful, thank you so much.
Just one more thing, if I think I've missed my period this month due to my cycles regulating can I start testing anytime or wait abit longer?

Flederjo · 29/06/2022 19:14

No reason not to start now, it might just mean you get through quite a few strips before you get a positive, depending on where you are in your cycle.

Newbubs · 30/06/2022 07:00

Thanks very much for the info

Also, test twice daily for ovulation - your surge can occur in the afternoon x
