Alcohol and TTC

Hi all, I’m just wondering who of you are cutting out alcohol completely when TTC? Or if you think the odd glass of wine won’t really do any harm?

I’m currently living life normally, but planning on not drinking in my two week wait - any thoughts on if this will make a difference?

(Full disclosure I normally have a bottle of wine a week or more if I go out, but that’s rare)

Thanks all!

I don't drink a lot but I didn't give up alcohol until I got my bfp. It took us 14 months to conceive due to male factor infertility so there was no way I was putting my life on hold indefinitely.

You’ll get a full spectrum of answers.

I didn’t. TTC can take a long time and the chance of harm during the first two weeks seems very slim.

You're fine to drink a bit when TTC. The placenta doesn't take over until you're about 6 weeks so a few glasses won't harm too much. However, I would say I didn't get pregnant until I stopped drinking, BUT in the spirit of openness, I was drinking far too much over lockdown so that might have been having an impact on my fertility, if only in terms of the weight I put on

A bit of alcohol will harm absolutely nothing. Just relax and enjoy life.

I didn't really cut down as it took us two years to get pregnant and I would have gone bananas from putting my life on hold like that.

Alcohol is meant to affect both implantation and the egg quality but that's from heavy drinking and not what I suspect you'll be doing. Let's not forget alcoholics, drug addicts etc get pregnant all the time so your Friday G&T won't make a difference I suspect!

I do enjoy a good drink once in a while so thank you for the reassurance!

Is it reasonable to ask family members not to hold my baby if they’ve been drinking? Drinking to the extent they sometimes repeat themselves. A regular occurrence too.

Felicity42 · 16/03/2023 15:50

Absolutely it's reasonable.
In fact it's s your responsibility as a parent not to deliberately put your child where there is danger of an accidental fall.

Bluestar27 · 16/03/2023 16:07

Thankyou, this is my instinct!! Think I’ll just be honest next time and say no!

Lcb123 · 16/03/2023 16:09

No I’m not stopping. I usually drink within recommended weekly limit anyway. Very healthy otherwise. If it happens, it will happen!
