False Negatives/Late BFP stories please!

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to hear some first hand accounts of false negatives/late BFP’s as I’m slowly losing my mind wondering what’s going on.

Backstory - 3DC, youngest will be 3 in September. Prior to having kids, my cycles were incredibly regular, so much so, that when I was a day late with my first, that’s how I knew I was pregnant because it was so unlike me, and in between having DC’s, my cycle fell back in to relatively regular patterns too.

I breastfed DC3 for 2 and a half years and the only thing that changed when we stopped bfing in January, was the cycle length, not the regularity. I went from having a 26-27 day cycle, down to a 22-23 day cycle, so for 6 months, I’ve had a very predictable pattern, albeit much shorter than I’d like!

I’m now on CD27 and no signs of AF. I’ve been cramping for a little over a week, had horrendous tugging, pulling pains in my lower stomach 6 days ago combined with feeling like my cervix was ‘heavy’ - it actually hurt to sit in certain positions and could only be described as feeling like my cervix was swollen and trying to fall out!!

My boobs are sore - I have to hold them when rolling over in bed and laying on my front is now completely off the cards. I’ve had several mornings of feeling nauseous, and last night parts of my dinner tasted completely different to normal - to name but a few classic symptoms. I don’t normally feel any pains or cramping other than on ovulation day and the day/night before I come on, so the fact I’ve had these ongoing ‘symptoms’ for a week now is not like me.

We DTD around ovulation (I know when I ovulate as I suffer from absolutely awful ovulation pains, so it’s very hard to mistake them!).

I’ve taken 5 tests over the last 7 days and they’ve all been negative, not even a hint of a line. I’m not under any stress, no lifestyle or diet changes, no medication etc.

I know that being a few days late can be normal for some people, but generally speaking, the only times I’ve been later than 3 days over the last 6 years has been when I’ve been pregnant, but the tests seem to disagree this time!

I guess I’m just wondering if any of you have experienced a BFN when you’ve been 3-5 days late, then gone on to get a BFP?

Or, if you think it’s possible that my cycles are lengthening now that I haven’t been breastfeeding for 6 months and things are simply adjusting back to my older cycle lengths?

Thank you so much for any stories that you share, or advice/info you may have!

Bump, anyone? (No pun intended Grin)

@whichwayisupfromhere how many dpo are you OP? Might be too early to test?

whichwayisupfromhere · 20/06/2022 12:19

@Harriet669 I'm 17 DPO, so I'd assume I'd have more than enough HCG to detect by now, if I am pregnant.

Will all three of my previous pregnancies, I received really strong, dark positives the day after a missed period, and I didn't use FMU with any of them! So I'm very confused as to what's going on right now

Same situation as me, period is 5 days late all negative tests. Havent had a period since April so I think my issue is coming off the pill and my pcos! Its very frustrating!

With both my two pregnancies I didn't get a positive test until four days late for my period some people ovulate later than expected or takes longer for hcg to show up.

Good luck!!

whichwayisupfromhere · 22/06/2022 10:35

Sorry to hear that you're in the same boat @Littleonek when did you last take a test?

I took another test this morning and it's still negative. I'm 5-6 days late going by my last 6 cycles, or 2-3 days late based on what my cycles were like before I stopped breastfeeding.

I'm still exhausted, boobs still hurt, I've been cramping now for 10 days. DH brought me back a bottle of Dr Pepper from the shops last night, I had one mouthful and gave the bottle to him because it tasted completely different to me!

All very unlike me. I just want my period to arrive so that I can stop stressing!

I'm in a similar position, I'm usually very regular 28 days always. I woke up with stomach cramps Monday assumed AF was here as had a tiny bit of spotting but nothing! Had a dull ache on left side of abdomen on and off for a week.

I'm now 3 day's late and struggling to get my sports bra on as boobs bigger and I'm so tired. I did a Sainsbury's test yesterday and got a very faint positive but didn't trust it so did a clear blue digital today and that's negative!

whichwayisupfromhere · 22/06/2022 11:19

It's frustrating isn't it, @Perexi - but at least you've had a positive! I've read that CB digital require a high amount HCG in comparison to the majority of other tests, so maybe try a FRER tomorrow, or CB digital again in a few days after your HCG levels have risen a little more?

With all three of my DC's, I received positive tests either on the day AF was due, or the very next day. I know each cycle/pregnancy can be different, but it's odd that I usually get positives quickly, whereas almost a week down the line, I'm still none the wiser!

I'm starting to wonder if I've just skipped a cycle entirely? Though I'll be 30 next year and have never had that happen before.

Then again, I'm also torturing myself by reading countless other threads where women didn't receive a positive results for WEEKS after their LMP, so, who knows!? Hmm

Same here! I did a cheap test today and negative again!

Ive been offered a new job and need to quit this week so need some answers asap. If a week late and no period then I think its defo a no to pregnancy.

Hey! I just got my BFP today on CD 52 I think I ovulated really late my cycles have been really irregular after baby 1 especially with breastfeeding.

I tested 10 days ago CD 42 and had BFNs so have just been waiting for AF to show.

Congratulations @Squishybean Smile

Wow, CD52!? That's some wait! I'd have been climbing the walls sitting around in limbo for so long.

I really hope that isn't the case with me, but I'm now a week late and still no sign of AF. I've decided to hold off from testing for a few more days because it's costing me a small fortune weeing on plastic every morning only to keep seeing BFN every time.

I know it's so strange! Just trying to not think about it for a few days now and will test Sunday or Monday I think when I'll be a week late. I'm just not somebody who is late or misses AF (well I haven't before I hope its not a new thing now we are TTC)

Ah I didn't know that about the clearblue, I got the digital one as it's written so thought it would be super clear.....

whichwayisupfromhere · 23/06/2022 17:59

@Perexi I can't remember the exact amount of HCG that the digital tests require, but I know that it's a fair bit more than FRER and standard cheap tests.

I'm holding off from testing too, I can't keep wasting money but at the same time, it simply doesn't feel like AF is coming any time soon!

Tomorrow will make me 8 days late, so if I haven't come on by Sunday, making me 10 days late, then I guess I'll have no choice but to re-test on Monday!

I hope your period OR a BFP arrives soon! It's awful being in limbo.

I'll be keeping this thread updated as and when AF arrives, if she ever does!

Morning all -

I thought I'd leave an update as I know how frustrating it can be to read a thread that's similar to something you're going through while you're searching for answers, but the OP never comes back with updates.

Today makes me 11 days late and I've just this second come on!

I ovulated a lot later than I'd realised this month. I have a 14 day luteal phase, and the Sunday before last, I experienced excruciating pains that felt exactly like my ovulation pains, but I was 'supposed' to have ovulated 9-10 days before then, so I put those pains down to weird cramping and didn't even stop to think that actually, I was just ovulating really late!

So, the timings check out - awful ovulation pains 14 days ago and now my period is here.

I'm not sure what caused such a late ovulation this month and it's been HELL on earth being so late for my period, but I can't finally feel at ease.

How are you getting on @Perexi ?

Ah at least you got to the bottom of it!

Mines a bit strange I suddenly got really bad cramps worse than I have had before Friday evening and some very light bleeding for 2 day's then it stopped! I'm wondering if giving blood last weekend may have freaked my body out a bit maybe? Was my first month of TTC so fingers crossed I just get back to my normal regular cycle.

Dd had regular "periods" but tested monthly as she felt off. They were all negative. She went to GP about unexpected weight gain (she is normally size 6 so nowhere to hide) GP thought she was 24 weeks pregnant but scan next day showed she was 28 weeks
