Hi,

im 38, 39 in July. My husband is 45. We are just planning TTC which we haven’t done for various reasons before now. My husband works away so that already narrows our chances to probably 6 cycles in a year when he will be home. I want to do everything possible to give us the best chance and just looking for advice on supplements people recommended other than a normal prenatal that may be helpful for my age. I have been using OvuSense for a year to track ovulation and this is showing that I am ovulating, fairly regular cycle. Any advice on supplements, similar stories etc much appreciated.

I'd go get bloods checked too make sure everything is ok that you aren't low in anything and take it from there supplement wise. I've been taking raspberry tea as I had a MC on my first pregnancy in January it's meant to help fertility and tone uterine lining very important not to drink it when pregnant though.

I agree with the above poster and would recommend fertility checks for both of you asap. We did this at the start of TTC because of our ages (both 39)....it would have been pretty shit to have tried for months only to find out that some hormone or sperm level/value wasn't right to start with!!!

What I was taking anyway:

  • Prenatal multivitamin with 600mcg folic acid and Omega 3 (Omega 3 is strongly recommended now when ttc and in pregnancy)
  • extra 400mcg folic acid due to family history of spina bifida
  • Probiotics

What I took on the cycles conception worked (1 early miscarriage, 1 current successful pregnancy staright after):

  • Grapefruit juice daily till ovulation to increase EWCM (this works freakishly well, I honestly couldn't believe it!)
  • Soy Isoflavones days 3-7 to boost ovulation and oestrogen production (it's like natural Clomid)
  • I put my husband on L-Carnitin to aid sperm production/quality. He still takes it, it's just an amino acid that can also be beneficial for fitness.
  • Baby aspirin daily for the successful pregnancy
  • Progesterone pessaries for the successful pregnancy

Who knows what of the extra stuff helped or not, but it is interesting that I took it the only times I conceived.

@sabs22 what supplements are you taking at the moment?

If a little older I’d really recommend COQ10 supplements. They help cell renewal and are well known for aiding fertility. Particularly in those of us who are over the 30 mark. They take up to 3 months to really work. If nothing else you’ll have glowing skin! I also found evening primrose capsules helped with creating CM between my period and ovulation, but don’t take them once you’ve ovulated. Good luck
