heavy periods

My periods are really begining to bug me. I have never before had a situation where I've had to change my sanitary protection in the night, but now even using a super tampon and a towel won't last the night on the first couple of days of my period.
I really never like using tampons overnight.

I came off the mini-pill in October, but even before then I was occassionally having very heavy periods ... now they seem to be much worse. Also quite a lot of clots, but not really that much pain or discomfort.

Anyone else suffer from very heavy periods?

Hi Beanie

You are not alone. I first went on the Pill years ago to help ease my periods. They used to be really heavy and some months the pain would make me physically sick.

I then learnt that the Pill was convenient in helping you know when you were due, and my Doc recommended running 2 packs together if my period was due at an inconvenient time (exams / Glastonbury festival etc)

Now I'm TTC, my periods are getting heavier and more painful as each cycle passes.

If you have not sought advice from a gynae on this matter I suggest you do so. Your GP can refer you to a gynaecologist.

You don't have to put up with this, besides which it is in your interests to find out why this is happening. One possible reason could be fibroids as these can cause heavy bleeding.

Do therefore get it checked out further.

Sorry to crash! I've got mega heavy periods since having coil fitted a year ago. Is it just the coil and something I'll have to just live with or should it have settled down by now??

Hi. I'd seek advice on this matter if I were you just in case something like fibroids is causing the heaviness. As someone who lived with period problems for many years don't just live with it!!!.

manuka · 10/01/2008 17:03

Yes I will. I can't believe I've tolerated it for a year! I've leaked whilst wearing a mooncup and a towel which was very embarrasing at band practice in a room full of blokes!!!

I think I should go and see my doctor. I am now on day 8. It's no longer heavy but it is still bleeding and I just went to the loo and what looked like a blood clot was left in the toilet.

Infact - I was feeling so queazy all this week that I decided to do a pregnancy test incase it was ectopic or something. It came back negative (As I thought it would) and I feel ok now, but having such long periods is really messing up my trying for a baby and is just inconvenient.

Hi beaniesteve, i am having the same problem as you.
TTC but periods have become very irregular and much much heavier with clots (yuck).
I have been to the doc who wasn't very helpful but is referring me to gynae as we have been TTC for 2 years.
Definitely see the doc and get referred especially if you are TTC.

Go to see your GP immediately as this can be sorted out. I put up with 12 months of either getting up in the night to change a tampon or as I later discovered using two super plus at a time during the night.

This month I plucked up the courage to go to see the Dr and was given Tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid tablets. They restrict blood flow to your womb and prevent your womb from contracting/cramping (which exacerbates the blood flow).

I have never felt so well during my period and it just went to show how ill I actually was. The effects wore off after about 5 hours for the worst two days but I could still manage very well (6 hours) on a super tampax.

I wouldn't have a coil fitted as I am ttc. Dr told me it would take up to 9 months to get my fertility back after having one fitted. With the tablets I don't take them until AF arrives so it shouldn't interfere with anything.

thanks for the advice. It's strange because I seem to get one period which is fine, then one which is really long and heavy. 3 periods ago I phoned NHS Direct as it was so bad, the one before this one was fine.

I started wondering if perhaps I was expelling a 'bad' foetus or something

Fiofio, I have had a really embarrassing situation in work where I bled through my jeans, that was in August before I came off the pill. It was probably the first time I was taken by surprise like that. Horrible isn't it, you have my sympathies.

Hi again.

I have booked an appointment with my doctor for Tuesday morning but I need some advice.

While having a bath a week or so ago I noticed what looks like a lump (pea sized) on my left side kinda in the crease between the top of my thigh and my bits (For want of a better word). I checked the other side and there's a smaller insignificant lump on the other side too.

Looks like for some reason a node or something has become inflamed.

Is it possible I have Fibroids?
I have had a really heavy period, which in total lasted about 8-9 days.

I'm really scared about this as I don't know how it might effect my fertility. I'm not overweight and I don't have any other symptoms though I have had a couple of bouts of Cystitis in the last 6 months.

Can anyone give me some advice or share their experiences?

thanks

Hi Beanie

Just joined this thread and read about your problems. Just wondered what the doctor said, hope I'm not being too nosey. Sounds to me like you have fibroids or a polyp. That's what I have and my periods are horrendous.
