Morning after pill ... how effective?

Hi everyone, I have NC for this.

I know there have already been a millions threads on this but I suppose each situation is slightly different and I'm hoping you can help me.

Had unprotected sex last night (stupid I know). Instantly panicked and realised my ovulation day is today (or so I think but only going off what my app tells me and my discharge). Went out today and got the MAP (levonorgestrel was the one given to me) but have been having pains too since this morning. I don't think the pains are related to the MAP since I had them before plus always get them around my ovulation date.

If my ovulation is today, can the MAP stop the egg from being released or will it be too late? I took it at 12pm so 13 hours after DTD.

I have been trying to work out on other websites when my predicted ovulation date is but is hard to tell since my cycle length varies between 25-29 days.

I don't know if ovulation cramps are a sign ovulation is happening or is about to happen.

I'm panicking. Thanks in advance.

Well, I have a 16 year old following the use of it. I took it a lot later though. Probably 60 hours. I believe its much less effective the longer it's left.

PrettyPolly92 · 12/04/2022 19:08

Did the pharmacist tell you why they gave you levonorgestrel? I know around but me if you get the MAP in the 5 days leading up to O they give EllaOne (ulipristal) because I heard levonorgestrel isn't that effective ☹️

ZealAndArdour · 12/04/2022 19:20

MAP totally ineffective if it isn’t taken in time to stop ovulation. There’s no way of knowing really, you’re going to have to do a pregnancy test in a few weeks and see where you’re at.

ZealAndArdour · 12/04/2022 19:21

Like a pp, personal experience of unplanned pregnancy after failed MAP.

You should still have time to get a coil fitted though if you can get an appointment.

PrettyPolly92 · 12/04/2022 19:37

Yes This is right, the copper coil can be fitted up to 5 days later and is more effective that MAP xx

dreamsiclex · 12/04/2022 21:21

Oh dear. I'll just have to wait and see then I suppose. My own fault. We do want another DC just not yet.

No the pharmacist didn't say why she gave me levonorgestrel Sad I've had EllaOne in the past. Don't know why she gave me a different one this time.

My period is due on the 26th so we will see.

Thanks everyone.

I thought it thickened the lining of the womb to make it uninhabitable for conception? Sorry if that's incorrect.

I've taken it a fair few times over my life and have never had a pregnancy as a result. I do know if you're over 10 stone it reduces the effectiveness quite significantly. I was shocked at that!

If you really don't want another child then coil is something you should sort ASAP. I wouldn't be hanging around waiting!

ZealAndArdour · 12/04/2022 22:25

Did you get the MAP for free? That might be why she gave you Levonorgestrel, it might have been the only one they’ve got the PGD to give out for free. But I dunno, just a guess.

OP, if you’re not in a position to have a baby right now if would seem to make sense to put some serious effort into arranging an appointment for an emergency coil fitting tomorrow! Ovulating this close to the unprotected intercourse is massively increasing your chances of getting pregnant compared to any other point in your cycle (obviously).

ZealAndArdour · 12/04/2022 22:29

@pizzacutterbun It increases progesterone which should delay ovulation and also thicken cervical mucous to prevent sperm reaching the uterus or fallopian tubes. But if you’ve already ovulated or the sperm has managed to get past your cervix before you take the MAP then you will still get pregnant.

dreamsiclex · 13/04/2022 08:57

Yes I got it for free. I was expecting to pay tbh but she said she was doing it on a scheme so I didn't have too, maybe that's why I got the one I did.

I'm not over 10 stone so maybe that will go in my favour.

I had no idea having the coil fitted was an option. Will look into that today to see where I can get it done. Is the copper coil hormone free? Who do I ring to sort this out?

Google your local family planning clinic or contraception and sexual health. Just type your area and sexual health clinic, etc.

Make sure you let the receptionist know that you need it for emergency contraception and not just routinely do that they don’t fob you off with an appt in three weeks time or whatever.
