Fertility lubricant study

Hi guys,

Has anyone seen the article in the daily mail about how fertility lubricants actually hinder sperm mobility. Its making me want to throw out my pre seed! What does everyone think?

Study: 'Sperm-friendly' lubricants are not safe for swimmers mol.im/a/10638751 via dailym.ai/android

If you've found this page in search of lubes that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best lubes useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

Yes I saw that. We specifically used conceiveplus and preseed because of dh low sperm count. I feel cheated.
However I've not read the full study, there might be more too it.

Graceybaby · 23/03/2022 10:21

In my opinion I think any un-natural lubricant hinders sperm mobility - I read a study about different lubricants and their effects and pre-seed did hinder the mobility but it was only ever so slightly. If you don't need to use lube to actually make sex more comfortable etc (i.e you dont produce a lot of CM) then I wouldn't use it, but its all personal preference :)

Bobduncan · 23/03/2022 10:44

Think next month I'll just throw out the lubes!

How interesting! My dh has always said we shouldn't use it because he believes that lube is lube and unnatural- plenty of people get pregnant without it. I've always insisted on it but I think I'll ditch it this cycle too.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 23/03/2022 20:59

Surely the timespan is significant? After 2 hours the sperm were affected. How about when it's used 15 minutes before sex as is recommended and the supposedly seconds it takes them to swim through it and the cervix?

texasschmexas · 23/03/2022 21:08

On that note, what is a safe, natural lubricant? Coconut oil?

Coffeeandcupcake · 24/03/2022 13:59

We used pre-seed and got pregnant first try, however as it was first try I have no idea if pre-seed made any difference or if this would have been the case anyway. Next baby I'm going to try without just to see! Grin

DogsAndGin · 25/03/2022 18:14

And the article says MN recommends using raw egg whites…
Anyone?!

Bobduncan · 25/03/2022 18:36

@DogsAndGin yeah I found that totally weird! I won't be putting an egg white near my fanjo any time soon Grin

Omg we’ve used this every cycle and still nothing pregnant. Maybe this is part of the problem! All our tests have come back normal

NorseKiwi · 25/03/2022 20:44

I saw a Youtube video with an US OBYN and she said you absolutely don't need to use pre-seed type lube. One is better off staying properly hydrated so your body can produce enough mucus when required!

texasschmexas · 26/03/2022 08:08

Egg whites?! Interesting. Do we need to pre whisk them? That'd be a way to kill the mood 🤣

Coffeeandcupcake · 26/03/2022 08:52

@texasschmexas that made me laugh! 😂

Raw egg white is disgusting to start with, I certainly wouldn't want there anywhere near me down there, and yes what a mood kill! Raw egg has a funny smell as well (well it does to me). Like I said we used pressed and it worked first time, but next time I won't use it as I reckon it didn't have anything to do with it but we'll see Smile

GlitteryGreen · 26/03/2022 09:28

I got pregnant using preseed but it ended in a chemical- have casually wondered if it allowed a less than great sperm to get further than it normally would have?

I'd really recommend Evening Primrose Oil if you're looking to improve/create egg White CM. I never had any (that I could notice or track) before taking it, but I gave it a try after a recommendation on here and after a couple of weeks I had visible ewcm around ovulation and got pregnant again 👍 I'd say give that a go.

texasschmexas · 05/04/2022 20:11

Just came back to say, apparently there's a middle Eastern fertility treatment where you're supposed to sit over a concoction including eggs, honey and olive oil!

Chanel05 · 22/04/2022 06:09

Came back to say that I abandoned the lube this month and got my bfp!

0Frizzle · 22/04/2022 07:16

I don't know for sure, but I can imagine it has to do with your own "wetness" when having sex. After a mc and another 9 months of trying the last few times we just put it in quickly (self insemination with donor seed). So I didn't "prepare" myself. This time I read about preseed and thought: maybe I should really take enough time to prepare, so the seeds can swim better, and everything is just more ready to receive? I'll let you know if it has lead to a bfp🤭

Really, really hoping that the person doing the research was an intern and misunderstood when women were discussing egg white cervical mucus here 😂

I will not be cracking an egg over my fanny. Imagine bits of shell getting up there, omelette minge is definitely not on my "fertility aids I'm willing to try" list.

HedgehogToes · 23/04/2022 11:15

Just from my own experience, I've been using preseed for 2ish years on and off. Had 4 bfps over that time. 1 chemical, 1MMC and two successful pregnancies that didn't end in a living baby.

Kitty901 · 23/04/2022 14:34

Omg really??!! Been using pressed for months now and nothing. I will put it away for next cycle.
