is it possible to get a false negative on a pregnancy blood test?

Yes - it happened to me

I somehow knew I was pg (first and so far only pregnancy) but only got BFN's on pg tests. So I went to the doctor, had a blood test, also BFN. By this time my period was a couple of weeks late. Thought I couldn't possibly be pg so went on a drunken weekend - then got my bfp ( a wee on a stick one) the following week.

wouldn't have thought so. sorry.

interesting. i didnt think a false negative was possible either, googled it and seems it is. tiger feet, did your doc explain it?

I was told that it could have just been too early - possible I suppose but I "felt" pregnant and my period was late. However I must have ovlulated very late in my cycle as according to my dates I was 13 weeks when I had my dating scan but I was actually only 11 weeks. So I had the blood test when I thought I was 6 weeks but I was actually only 4 weeks.

thanks, that helps i feel preg, plenty of symptoms, neg urine tests and neg blood test... if a were preg it would only have been 5.5 weeks when had blood test. dont know what to make of it all....

yellowbean - ovulation symptoms can be similar to pregnancy symptoms. I know I've misread late ovulation as pg symptoms (sore boobs, cramping, lots of CM), then following a series of BFNs, two weeks later AF turns up. I've now learnt to keep bd'ing right up to AF, as looking back on previous cycles I've always missed the egg because I've already 'felt' pregnant.

It's very very rare (but not impossible) to get a false negative on a blood test as it should be able to pick up the HCG hormone the day after implantation (normally 7-10 days past ov).

hi yellowbean, i've been following all of your posts and without trying to upset you think its highly unlikly you are pg, im sorry

I was in a similar situation to you a few months ago, i thought i was pg as i hadn't got af and had all the pg symptoms going. I wasn't pg and knew really i couldnt have been i still kept it in my head and still had the symptoms. It drove me mad taking test after test after test, must have spent about £80 dp was going mad lol

Its a horrible thing to go through and they reckon the stress of it all can stop your periods.

As it turned once i admitted i really wanted another baby we tried and caught within a month or so, unfortunatly i lost it at 10 weeks but caught 8 weeks later and am now 9 weeks gone

I think good advice to you would be, you really want another baby so get sh**ng

yellowbean · 05/01/2008 20:48

thanks for advice.. i know ovulation can mimic preg symptoms... but i've had symptoms for 6 weeks now! we were NOT TTC, dd is only 1 and it is certainly not on the agenda for us yet, or probably ever, so i am not desperate for another baby. Am am not in the least bit upset not to be pregnant!!!!
i'm not taking loads of tests so not wasting money. i just want to rule out all the possibility of being pregnant because at the end of it i have all these unexpected symptoms that i need to sort. there is obviously something else up but i have only felt like this twice before and they are both in bed upstairs!! its very odd to have all the symptoms again without the pregnancy thats all. especially since i was not looking for symptoms.
good luck iliketosleep, hope all goes well

have you recently stopped having some form of contraception? coil, pill etc as that can make your hormones play up, make af go awol, make you feel sick etc

forgot to mention i had coil removed last march and only bleeding i've had since was the miscarriage in september!

yellowbean · 07/01/2008 16:55

no, not taking contraception... thats what weird, theres no other reason for these symptoms. I did get one positive test though so i'm guessing it was a pregnancy that ended v v quickly and the symptoms will soon end! i dont feel quite so sick now, though boobs really sore! which is not nice cos still breastfeeding dd!
