Folic acid whilst TTC ?

Hi
A back story prior to question…..
My partner and I started started ttc early last year but then he panicked and wanted to stop. He now says he’s ready to try again but this time states that we won’t be actively ttc but rather having unprotected sex and let nature take its course (so we’re actively trying then !) he’s 32 and I’m 42. I have two teenagers from another marriage. He has no children of his own, but is a brilliant stepdad to my girls .
He said this time no apps and no folic acid whilst ttc (sorry letting nature take its course)

With my other children and when we were ttc last year I took folic acid whilst trying.
Would you take folic acid whilst trying ?

Thanks :)

Absolutely. You should take a prenatal multivitamin, which will have folic acid in it.

Folic acid is to prevent birth defects. It doesn't help you get pregnant.

100%. as PP said is about development of foetus not about conceiving.

Irregardless of tcc I have taken folic acid as have had foliate deficiencies and aneamea

FreckledMouse · 22/02/2022 19:28

Exactly what PP said.
You need to take Folic acid / Pre Natals for babies development

Thank you, I’ve ordered some. I’ll pop them in a multi vitamin pot so as not to stress him out !

Hi op,

I thought I would add my opinion.

I think folic acid is good for both regular periods which can lead to successful conception as well as to reduce the risk of any birth defects.

When I don't take folic acid my periods are all over the place but I have been taking them for a while now and haven't had irregular/missed periods since

HaroldAndEthelMeaker · 23/02/2022 04:22

It's not up to him what you choose to put in your body (eg folic acid), and it's very foolish of him to ask you not to. He doesn't sound mature enough to be TTC, whether actively or passively (by not taking precautions).

LunaLights · 23/02/2022 05:16

He needs to be better informed and more mature if he is going to be a father.

Folic acid is to try to prevent birth defects, specifically neural tube defects like spina bifida. Why on earth would he say no to that if there is even a remote chance of pregnancy?

Mummyme87 · 23/02/2022 06:51

I’m assuming he doesn’t know the role of folic acid?
You 100% should be taking it to help prevent neural tube defects, ideally vit D aswell as the little parasites steal all that when you’re pregnant 🥰 so you want good stores. Otherwise, you don’t ‘need’ anything else.
