Missed two days folic acid

This is very unlike me - I've been taking folic acid for more than eighteen months, currently having fertility investigations due to my age and other health conditions. I've never forgotten a single tablet this whole time.My period started the other day and I was in so much pain I couldn't eat in the evening, so I didn't take my folic acid. The next day, it completely slipped my mind again. Will this make a difference considering I've bene taking it so long previously? I hate thinking I had this uninterrupted streak for so long and then messed it up! Psychologically it feels like I'm starting again, I know this is probably irrational.

Absolutely not. You will have high levels in your system from taking it for so long previously. It won't make any difference to forget a day or two, just keep taking it now that you've remembered.

I really wouldn’t worry. I didn’t remember on several occasions. Many just don’t take it at all.

Mo1911 · 13/02/2022 21:08

Not a problem at all. Your body won't void every single bit of folic acid for a long time. It's absolutely fine so don't worry.

Please don’t worry about this, 18 months of taking it is absolutely brilliant and two days will make no difference. Best of luck with it all

The reason for folic acid is to prevent neural tube defects in the growing foetus so if you have got your period, you aren't pregnant so it isn't an issue surely? Don't mean to be blunt.

Just commenting to prevent potentially harmful misinformation - in an ideal world you should be taking folic acid supplements well before falling pregnant www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/trying-for-a-baby/planning-your-pregnancy/

And no, if you miss a couple days it does not matter.

DarkDarkNight · 14/02/2022 00:23

No missing a couple of days won’t matter and don’t forget lots of foods are fortified these days (breakfast cereal and bread for example).

elenacampana · 14/02/2022 00:27

You’ve built up a very healthy store of it OP. Don’t worry about it :-)

elenacampana · 14/02/2022 00:28

(I was TTC for ages and forgot the folic acid every now and again. It was fine, baby is almost 14wks old now.)

I got pregnant unexpectedly at 17. I was on a ridiculous diet of basically pot noodles and toast. With copious amounts of coffee and coke. Never went near a vitamin. He was
Fine and is now a very intelligent healthy 15 year old. Don’t worry

newusername1977 · 14/02/2022 02:02

I didn't take any folic acid for any of my 3 pregnancies. I was in a country where they don't push it and I didn't know. All my kids are now above average intelligence, high achievers, no problems of any kind. It will be fine.

Suzyinthesummertime · 14/02/2022 02:08

No I wouldn't worry about it at all, it's easy to forget the odd day and you've been taking it a long time so it won't have made a difference
