Coming off the pill, irregular cycles

Hi all,

My partner and I decided to start ttc our first this year. I came off the pill end of December and had withdrawal bleed on 29th December. Since then I've had occasional cramping through January but no period yet. When I've come off the pill in the past I've always had a period about 2 weeks after the withdrawal bleed so expected the same this time round. We're both early 30s. I've always had irregular periods (around 40-50 day cycle) whenever I've had a break from the pill and also symptoms of pcos. I spoke to a dr about it once and she told me it was normal to have irregular periods even though I was in my late 20s.

What was your journey like when you came off contraception, specifically the pill?

Is there anything you recommend to regulate cycles? My friend got pregnant after using clomid but was only given it after years of trying and 3 miscarriages 😔

Any advice would be appreciated x

Hi @Millie23 DH and I decided to start TTC #3 mid-November. I had been on the mini-pill for several years with no periods at all. I stopped taking the pill on 14th November and had no withdrawal bleed at all which I thought was strange.

Had AF on the 15th of December and I am currently 7 weeks so we conceived first cycle. Try not to look too far in to it, it hasn't been too long since you stopped taking the pill, and hopefully, like us you will conceive quickly. I was super surprised how quickly it happened for us after so many years on the pill.

Sending you lots of baby dust!

Interested to hear the responses to this as I'm in a similar position.. came off the pill end of Dec and had a withdrawal bleed almost immediately but no sign of AF yet despite cramps for about a week and a half. Just want it to show so I can get on with TTC!

I came off the pill in Oct 2020, had 3 months of regular periods and then they just stopped from Feb-Oct 2021! I had 2 months of acupuncture sessions over the summer, which I think contributed to me getting regular periods again.
I think I’m an anomaly though with how long it took my body to regulate 🙈

So I have been on the mini pill since December 2018. I also have had irregular cycles although normally they are between 2 weeks and 3 weeks and 6 days but it always changes. I have had suspected endometriosis. However they found evidence that it might actually be adenomyosis
The first time I came of of the pill in October 2020. I did not get a withdrawal bleed and my first period arrived two months later on the 10th of December. Then I didn't get another period until the 16th of February 2021. Then after that I had one between every 3 and 4 weeks. I did not have a partner at the time and so this was not an issue.
In April I got with my partner and so decided to go back on the mini pill to be safe. However in November after 3 week long periods every other month I decided to come off of it and try and get an IUD fitted (incredible long waitlist down here) and just use condoms for now.

I came of it on the Thursday and on the Monday I had a withdrawal bleed and then did not get a period nearly 6 weeks. I have then had another one bang on 3 weeks later.
We decided that we wanted to start TTC earlier this month but did not really track anything as never actively been TTC before and now trying to figure it out. However, 3 weeks passed last Saturday and no sign of it. I have some spotting and light cramps (not as bad a normal cramps for me) but that's it no sign of AF.

Flo thinks I am due on tomorrow and so I am going to test then.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is everybody is different in relation to coming of the pill. The two times I have stopped it have been completely different and so I just think it depends on your body

If I remember correctly it took me around 3-4 months to start getting a somewhat regular periods after the pill, but I was younger then. When I was older, and my PCOS was in a worse shape, it took me around 6 months to regulate my periods after Mirena coil.

Hope this helps x

That's interesting, I've never tried acupuncture. Would you recommend it?

Oh man 6 months? I knew it would take a while but I guess now I'm over 30 it's going to take a bit longer ☹️

Thank you for your replies everyone x

I came off the pull august, had withdrawal bleed and had a period 6 weeks later. I then got pregnant the next two cycles however they were both miscarriages. Got pregnant the cycle after and now 10 weeks and keeping my fingers crossed. I tracked ovulation using OPKs which I found really useful as my cycles were also irregular , don't know if that was due to miscarriages or just in general as I never had a period for 10 years before being on the mini pill. Good luck xx

CSR721 · 04/02/2022 18:24

I came off mine end of August and thought I was mostly sorted after a few months out of whack but then this month I've been all over the place. Feeling quite down with it all now tbh. Was on progesterone only and now worried about my progesterone levels as my cycles are short and my periods super light. This cycle was only 21 days 😨

Nyxxie · 05/02/2022 09:02

@Millie23 yes please, I think my other half is sick of hearing me moaning about it!! Still nothing here, how about you?

I'm also joining the "stopped the pill late Dec but no AF" crew, its relieving to see that other people get it.

Do really wish AF would just come and be over with at this point, it's my first time trying to work out when I'm ovulating and I am lost with it.

Welcome to the club! It's so frustrating isn't it?! I started getting cramps again today but have almost stopped believing they mean anything at this point!

So frustrating! I have to trust that my body knows what it is doing, but it's thin trust sometimes Grin
