4 should be within the normal range, if you had underactive thyroid it would be higher
and generally low thyroids only get treated when the TSH is >10.

Hi I have had an underactive thyroid for 18 years, I am 54. I feel quite ill at the moment and had trouble breathing and a hoarse voice, Doc gave me an inhaler for asthma, I feel worn out, depressed, mentally impaired and no one seems to listen. I just lost my job because I was too slow! My tsh is 1.4 and T4 is 14, Doc put my thyroxine up to 275 daily, but looking on this site my levels look normal. Can anyone advise me?

Sambrads, since you are trying to concieve you'd want your TSH to be between 1 and 2. TSH4.0 is within the normal range used by GPs in UK (0.5-5), however in USA this range was adjusted (in 2003?) to 0.3-3, so you would be considered hypothyroid there. Endocrinologists (if you are sent to specialist) use the lower range, and in pregnancy they wouldn't want you to be much higher than TSH2.0
Mollyjay, i think your gp may have increased your dose of thyroxin because of a too low T4? I once found a nice page on the WWW with a list of the reference ranges for TSH, free T4, total T4, free T3 and total T3, but now can't find it again. Hope you feel better soon!
