Drinking at Christmas

I'm due to ovulate next on 24th/25th December. We will be trying that week, do you think it's OK for me to have a glass of wine or so and maybe some baileys as it's Christmas? I'm not a massive drinker, but it'll be nice to have something! When ttc 1 I basically gave up alcohol before we even started trying, but I feel more relaxed this time as I know it may take a while.

When does it become an issue to drink?

(If it's best to just avoid it then I will. There's no chance I'm already pregnant as this'll be the first time we try).

I got pregnant one Christmas when I drank a fair bit every night for a week but your mileage may vary. Maybe relaxing a bit might help.

Have as much as you like. I was trolled last Christmas when we conceived DS on Boxing Day.

Im glad as that and NYE was a lovely last hurrah (although obviously we were just at home) before I found out I was expecting.

I knew I’d probably be ovulating but had no intention of not drinking for Christmas, ttc can be a pain in the arse and emotionally draining enough as it is.

Trollied. Not trolled.

Ask your GP but if there's any doubt in your mind just decide now that you won't drink. Get some fizzy juice. No one was ever harmed by not drinking. Why the hand-wringing?

mynameiscalypso · 02/12/2021 11:41

Why on earth would anyone waste a GPs time asking this? I'd guess the vast majority of babies are conceived after some alcohol!

WheelieBinPrincess · 02/12/2021 11:42

It’s really not a matter for the GP.

Coffeetree · 02/12/2021 11:47

Fine, then don't ask GP and just decide not to drink if you're at all in doubt. No harm done and you'll avoid hangovers!

Spottybluepyjamas · 02/12/2021 11:52

Drink as much as you want until you find out you're pregnant. Giving up before then seems odd to me - it could take years! Hopefully not, but you know what I mean. Good luck!

OnSilverStars · 02/12/2021 11:56

Oh god. Have a drink! Could be months until you conceive if you ever do! Live your life

Bringonbaby3 · 02/12/2021 12:21

I’m in a similar situation, trying to conceive after my next period. 3rd baby and my first ovulation will be between Xmas and New Years.

With my 1st I got pregnant the week after my hen do so lots of alcohol consumed!

This time round I’m being more cautious and just having 1 glass of fizz at Xmas. I have 2 young children so getting drunk isn’t a good idea anyhow!

BiscuitLover3679 · 02/12/2021 13:29

My belief was that it doesn't really matter when you ovulate, it's only really when you're basically at missed period stage (after implanting etc) that it could affect development. I just wondered if I'd remembered incorrectly.

I drank up until I found out I was pregnant. My outlook on it was I would be putting more pressure on myself if I stopped drinking, eating this and that everytime I was due to ovulate and then come on my period anyway and feel more disappointed that I didn't enjoy myself and relax 🤷🏼‍♀️

I carried on as completely normal Smile

Please do not ask your GP this.

It’s absolutely fine to drink while TTC.

BiscuitLover3679 · 02/12/2021 14:26

I'm really not going to waste my gps time with this question!

What is the worry? Do you have family members who will give you a hard time if you decide not to drink? Just tell them to do one.

PoleFairy · 05/12/2021 19:59

Oh god, do not worry. I've been TTC for 5 cycles now and I've never stopped drinking. I'm not a massive drinker but I'm in the TWW and got smashed at my xmas party last night!

CShandy01 · 05/12/2021 20:33

I got absolutely smashed during the TWW with DD, and my pregnancy was absolutely fine. When I say smashed, I mean that meant consuming at least 2 bottles of Prosecco both weekends, plus bacardi, plus gin, plus bacardi through the week.

I would say just as soon as you get pregnant knock it on the head...that being said I also had the odd tipple when I was pregnant around my 2nd trimester. Each to their own xx
