Serum testosterone levels 2.1nmol/L

I have just had my day 21 blood test results back and although I originally thought everything was normal, I actually have quite high testosterone levels although I am ovulating, according to my progesterone levels. Has anyone successfully conceived with testosterone levels of around 2.1nmol/L?

We have been trying for just over 2 years and I've had one MMC.

I've got an appointment to talk to the GP and I don't want to get ahead of myself before then by thinking too much about what the results might or might not mean, but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience?

Just wanted to highlight that serum testosterone is meant to be tested as part of day 3 bloods for a baseline level. Testosterone spikes mid cycle so your elevated number is most likely just a timing issue.

Thanks Juno. I don't seem to have had it measured at my day 3 bloods, it's not on my test results as far as I can see on my NHS app. I'll double check with the GP when I have my appointment.

Otherwise it could be an indicator of eg pcos - do you have any other symptoms? Do you ovulate regularly?

LacksAnyImaginationAtAll · 29/11/2021 14:43

I do seem to ovulate regularly, I have regular periods which aren't that heavy, are only a little uncomfortable on the first day, and don't usually last longer than 3 days.

I have developed hairier toes and some stray hairs on my chin over the last 5 years or so (such fun) but figured that was just part and parcel of mid-to-late thirties stuff.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about then and purely due to timing! Out of curiosity, what else did they test your for on your day 21 test? It should only be progesterone really.

Tinkerbell098 · 29/11/2021 15:03

@LacksAnyImaginationAtAll were you told that 2.1 was high? the reference range I was given as part of my Day21 test is 0.5-2.6 nmol/L so seems like you're within?

LacksAnyImaginationAtAll · 29/11/2021 15:04

Thanks :-) Apparently the GP does want to talk to me about it, but that's likely to tell me I need to get my BMI down as it's currently around 35. At the risk of relying on Dr Google - if I'm ovulating and don't have the symptoms of PCOS it seems the results are unlikely to be a big deal - but I should continue to lose weight.

They tested prolactin, progesterone and androgens including testosterone, serum sex hormone binding glob and free androgen levels. The progesterone levels were a bit low (29.7) but I gather anything over 28 is pretty standard?

@Tinkerbell098 I was just told that the GP wants to talk to me about my androgen levels. I suspect that might be code for BMI but we'll see!

@LacksAnyImaginationAtAll when are you having the call with the gp? Hope everything is well.

LacksAnyImaginationAtAll · 29/11/2021 18:42

Not until 7 Dec. First phone appointment I could get, and I got it a few days ago. A two week wait for an appointment isn't that awful given the current state of primary care I don't think so I'll just have to sit tight.

Just found this thread @LacksAnyImaginationAtAll and wanted to wish you good luck with your appointment tomorrow!

Thanks! I'm a bit nervous but looking forward to knowing what the next steps are, even if it's bad news it'll be a relief to know...

Hey how did things go after

AnxiousPoster · 11/04/2024 21:59

@LacksAnyImaginationAtAll appreciate this is an old thread wondering if you could give an update as my situation sounds very similar.

Orlahoping · 12/04/2024 09:10

@AnxiousPoster thought I would come here to say that my testosterone level is similar and I still got pregnant quite quickly. It did end in an MMC but a few doctors since have told me 2.1 is actually in normal ranges. It is worth getting a couple of opinions though and also exploring if you have any other symptoms of PCOS to rule it out.
