When do I test if periods are irregular?

Im not sure if I'm starting my period or spotting. I know the only real way to know is to just wait it out but hopefully someone can help me here. I had a period 9-16th October then sex on the 27th October. According to the Flo app on my phone that date was high chance of pregnancy but I’m not sure how accurate that is. I forgot to log the last couple of periods, last one I logged before October was May, plus my periods are odd-for the last year or so I’ve had period every other month instead of every month (I think had a period in July but not 100% sure) . Anyway, yesterday evening I had some spotting which I thought might be the beginning of my period (as maybe they’re going back to normal again as my last period was a month ago) my breasts don’t feel tender but they feel heavy and I had cramps but they felt different to usual period cramps but surely can't be pregnancy related as i wouldn't have cramps this soon would I? I still haven't come on my period and normally would have by now after spotting. I've bought a cheap test and not sure when to take it. How do you know when to test if you’re periods aren’t usually monthly or regular?

Flo is just guessing and its guesses are based on a normal 25-30 day cycle, which is not you. When you skip a period it basically means you are not ovulating every month. It is also possible to have a period without having ovulated but NOT possible to ovulate then not have a period (unless pregnant). A period comes 12-16 days approx after you ovulate.

This means that you have less chances to conceive than someone with a normal cycle.

If you actually want to know when you ovulate your best bet is basal body temps. The alternative plan is have sex every 2-3 days when not on your period. That way you will hit ovulation no matter when it happens.

As for the testing - I went for every week with a cheapie. Dont get too excited about symptoms though - the rise in progesterone after ovulation creates similar symptoms whether you are pregnant or not.

Sorry - that all sounds a bit blunt but i hope is helpful. I have highly irregular cycles and am 1 year and 8 months into trying.

Exactly what the previous poster said. You'll need to start tracking your temp if you want to know when to test as you should be testing 2 weeks after ovulation but at the moment you have no way of knowing when you did.

The app won't be of any use with irregular cycles I'm afraid.
