Anyone out there doing IUI?

I know you would have much rather have gone about it naturally but it must be good to feel you are actually being monitored so that nothing is left to chance.

Thanks for your kind words. Your right if everything looks good, It will make me feel so much better that it should eventually happen.

The process:

For the first month of IUI I am being non-stimulated, so they are not using any drugs to enhance my eggs. The reason being is they

1. want to see how my eggs perform without drugs, as more natural the better
2. They don't want to risk a multiple birth, based on my sons prematurity, as it puts me at higher risk of another prem baby.

So they have me in for scanning every 2-3 days after CD10. Once my eggs have reached over 17, they will then inject me with a hormone that will make my egg release. I then need to go back to the clinic 36 hours after this injection as the egg should be in my womb and my husband then needs to spunk in a dish , his sperm is then washed, so they can have the best swimmers and then they inject the sperm using a catheter into my womb. I then go away for 2 weeks and pray that it has worked. Plus no drinking alcohol! ....so about that over xmas!
If it does not work, they try it all over again. After 3 attempts they then re-assess the treatment and decide what to do next. With someone who is being stimulated they normally go to IVF, but my next stage might be stimulants and then IVF.

This is all I know at the moment. Will update you if I have anything wrong, as the nurses are not too big on talking in any length about it.

I am going through IUI at the moment. On second cycle of stimulated with injectibles. Last month was our first try and it failed so very, very gutted. currently on 2ww and if this one fails as well then we only have one more try left before IVF as a last attempt.

I really hope it works for you.

Can I ask a silly question? Can they not do IVF with unstimulated eggs? Sorry, I'm very ignorant about all this!!

My consultant said the more cycles you do, the bigger your chances, so hopefully this month is your month.
I was at the clinic today and the IVF success rate is 55% which I found very impressive. So although it sounds daunting, its very successful!

I'm doing none stimulated, as my consultant does not want me to be at risk of a multiple birth due to some previous history. So we are taking it slowly... but I'm losing patience and only on cycle one! I'm on CD16 and my egg is only 16mm... how big were yours before insemination? I have one egg only as well. Nothing on the left side and one on the right.

Gilly - don't think they can do IVF like that as they use a cocktail of drugs to enable them to retrieve eggs. I think they even put you into a state of early menopause. Might have it completely wrong...

I ahve heard that about IVF before so I think you are right.

Last IUI was with clomid and had 2 follicles one 22mm and one 18mm but we got BFN. I hated the clomid and never taking it again so this month we are on injectibles which I much prefer as no real side effects. Had 2 follicles again this month - one 21mm and one 19mm - both in my right ovary as my left ovary just has one massive cyst in it which they think could have been caused by the clomid as I have PCOS as well.

Our clinic says success rates with IUI over 3 cycles is 60% and 23% per individual treatment cycle. IVF rates are slightly higher at about 27& per individual IVF and about 67% over a course of 3 IVFs. I think the 55% rate your clinic has quoted you is over a course of 3 treatments as there's no way it's 55% per one single treatment! If only it was!

Am not really looking forwar dot IVF to be honest as it's so much more invasive and painful but I guess we might have to cross that bridge when we get to it.

Beena do you mind if I ask where you're being treated? 60% for three cycles of IUI is a very good statistic.

I'm thinking of going back to IUI next year - we've done IVFs but never had an IUI get to trigger because I've always over responded. With my diagnosis the chance of a non stimulated IUI working is no better than with timed intercourse so we've always tried injectibles (I agree clomid is absolute hell). My FSH is a bit higher now though & I might respond less extravagantly to stims.

I'm at the SEFC clinic in Tunbridge Wells Kent. It's a private clinic but we don't have a choice in paying for it really as the NHS here only fund 2 goes at IUI and only once we have been ttc for 2.5 years and there was no way we were waiting until 2009 to start it!

Where have you had your IVFs done? And how manyhave you tried do you mind me asking?

Hi guys...

Just been to the clinic and they said my egg had gone for this month. They measured me on Monday and my egg was measuring 16mm and it looked to be growing at about 0.5 a day, today when she had a look there was no sign of my egg. She presumes I have ovulated so I need a blood test to confirm, but she is concerned about the size of my egg and if it reached over 17mm. Therefore she saw the consultant and they want to do another round unstimulated and scan me every day and then see if my egg reaches over 17mm. If not they will then introduce clomid. Therefore after all those clinic visits this month we did not even have the insemination. I'm so disappointed!
Whats pissed me off the most is I paid to go to a private consultant who scanned me a year ago and he advised clomid and follicle tracking as my eggs looked sluggish due to PCO, but don't have PCOS, but my NHS consultant said I could conceive naturally and rubbished the other advise. The whole thing is confusing and I'm thinking after next month if the same happens and there is no clear plan to go private. Any advise from anyone?
