I've read so many different things, I've read that it's very unlikely you conceive on the day on intercourse and it's more likely to conceive upto 6 days after intercourse opinions on this?

You conceive the day you have intercourse I thought? Implantation doesn't happen until a couple of days after.

What do you mean? You can’t conceive without having sex. Do you mean the implantation bit? Sperm can live inside you for about five days I think.

It just depends how close to ovulation you have intercourse. Sperm can live inside for five days or so but it's more likely you'll conceive if you have sex a day or two before or on ovulation day.

I really recommend 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility'. I learned so much about my body from reading it.

An egg only lasts around 24 hours after ovulating but sperm can last up to 5 days.
So if you have sex the day you ovulate you would get pregnant that day (or not if it doesn't work!) but if you have sex a couple of days before ovulating you wouldn't get pregnant until the egg is released a few days later.

What? I think you need to brush up on how this works! It's got to do with when you ovulate, not when you have sex. So you if you have sex once five days before ovulation or the day before... How many days after sex you get pregnant will be based on the ovulation part!

Lyla4333 · 07/09/2021 11:44

See I thought you conceive the day you have sex but my sister had a sperm donor and she conceived nearly a week later and a looked some things up and it says conception doesn't necessarily happen on the day you have intercourse it can take upto 5 days

Yes, you only conceive when sperm meets egg. That might be the day you have sex or a few days later, because sperm can live inside you for a few days when you're fertile. Your body creates favourable conditions for sperm to survive and swim to where they need to be for a few days a month. But you still need to have sex/inseminate close to ovulation day or there will be no egg for the sperm to meet.

The sperm can't reach the egg if the egg hasn't been released yet. If intercourse happens before the egg is released then they can survive for up to 5 days so if ovulation happens in that time one of those sperm(s?) could fertilise the egg.
