How long after intercourse can sperm survive inside you? Want to know, as am a few days late this month, and had coil removed. Just occured to me whether there were any sperm lurking around from before coil was removed that could have fertalized an egg. We have been careful since so know I can't have got pregnant after coil out?

3 days as I understand it. Do a test to put your mind at rest.

sensiblehead · 03/12/2007 00:16

Coil doesn't stop pg, it stops implantation so you could have already had a fertilised egg on its way IYSWIM. I would definitly advise a test just to be sure!

in theory sperm can survive for up to 5 days, however the reality is that most sperm only survives about 48 hours.

wannaBe · 03/12/2007 09:04

also removal of coil can affect your cycle iirc.

Divvy · 03/12/2007 09:07

The coil DOES stop pregnancy, it releases hormones locally in your womb, to stop ovulation.

If you have just had the coil removed, you may be late as you are not back to a regular cycle yet.

Test to make sure.

mylittleponey · 03/12/2007 09:11

depends on the coil you have - the mirena coil has hormones. Not sure if they stop ovulation though but they effect the womb lining.

bealcain · 03/12/2007 11:32

i got pg with ds2 after having my mirena coil removed. we had sex 3 days before hand and none for the week after to be safe!

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 03/12/2007 11:38

i had ds 4 with 6 day yes 6 day old sperm
i was having ovulaion induction/tracking and ovulated too many eggs .we were told to abstain and did (i did not want triplets on top of our 3)
they were horrified when i was pg and obviously thought we had done it but we hadn't
they scanned us every two days so we knew when we conceived - 6 day olders!!!! ds is gorgeous if a little off the wall!

sensiblehead · 03/12/2007 11:46

Divvy, no they do not, at least not all of them so best to err on the side of caution no?

Divvy · 03/12/2007 11:50

So you are telling me that if its not the mirena coil, then all women with the copper type coil have a miscarriage every month in theory then?

That cant be right surely?

sensiblehead · 03/12/2007 11:54

yes it is right, the sperm can still reach the egg and fertilise it, however it is never allowed to implant in the womb lining so whilst there is a pregnancy there you are never actually pregnant IYSWIM.

Divvy · 03/12/2007 11:59

I dodnt like the sound of that! Glad mine was the mirena coil then...eck!

....but when an egg is fertilsed it starts sending out hormones to tell the body its on its way, and not to shed the lining...before implantation..that cant be good for a woman to got through every month..even if she didnt know about it...her body does?

sensiblehead · 03/12/2007 12:04

I don't know to be honest, I would guess that it is not to big a deal as so many women have been happy with this contraception for so long.

I don't know where I stand on the whole fertilised egg thing, I think that I don't think it is a pregnancy until it has implanted anyway so dosn't "count" but that is not a thought I am entirly comfortable with .... [ponder]

SOrry for the hijack China11, have you decided to test or not test? I hope the result is what you are hoping for either way

Divvy · 03/12/2007 12:07

another thread?

sensiblehead · 03/12/2007 12:15

If you like, I don't know that much though - you could probably learn more on the internet sites that cover this!

Holly78 · 03/12/2007 12:49

Hi just like to say that i know this is true about the copper coil, i had mine removed last month and had this discussion with my doc she said the same thing, basically it just stops the fertilised egg implanting and thats why you can get the coil fitted up to 5 days after sex because it takes between 7/12 day for egg to implant itself. Thats why there are apparently a huge fuss with some religions about it as they consider conception from fertilisation and see the coil as termination !! Also Divvy on the egg sending signals and stuff i don't know but i had horrendus pain and bleeding (7-12days)every month with the coil.
China my first af was a week late after my coil was removed i thought i was pg but i'm not although my af only lasted 2 days (brill) but that was how they used to be before i had my coil fitted. It is hard to say a lot of people i have spoke to found their af was late but it is perfectly possible you may be pg i would personally would wait a week after af was due then if no show do a test, but if you are really worried just test hun and put your mind at rest. Hope you get the outcome you are looking for good luck x

mawbroon · 03/12/2007 15:10

The length of time that sperm can live is varies from a few hours to up to a week, depending on the conditions.

If there is no fertile quality mucus then it will die within a few hours. If there is lots of fertile quality mucus then it can live up to a week.

And somewhere in between too.

china11 · 03/12/2007 23:57

Thanks for all your replies, peeps! I have had stomache cramps today, so think am due on, so panic over.(not decided whether to try for another yet, had coil removed as been in too long and considering what contraception to have next, or whether to try for a baby girl, as have 3 boys already.)
