Nervous question on breastfeeding and getting pregnant...

Eek, I'm being brave starting my own thread like this... I'm a lurker, I usually hang around on another board, but here goes...

I've been breastfeeding for nine months, well I say breastfeeding, I mean expressing... ds was in hospital for a while and the nurses confused him with bottles so he wouldnt take to the breast, so I've expressed the milk for him ever since... The thing is I've never met anyone who's done this for more than a short period of time, I know that breastfeeding makes you temporarily infertile (usually) but I've had periods since the week after giving birth, they are about 2 weeks further apart though... basically to cut a very long story short - we've been trying to concieve again since my son was about two months old, thankfully it didn't happen back then, I think I was suffering from 'bump loss' and it clouded my brain! Then we sort of just carried on, not trying but not using contraception... nothing's happened in 7 months! I'm ending the expressing this month, and we're seriously hoping to get pregnant again, I'm only 17 (but married, thankyou lol)... what do you think my chances are? Do you think it was something other than the making milk that's kept me from conceiving? AARGH!! I'm getting antsy, I really want it to be this month - I have no idea how people who need IVF type treatments manage to stay sane, and I already have a baby!

I don't want to offend you, but can I ask, what's the hurry?

University at some point would be heaven! Sigh and I know it sounds daft, but I need something to take my mind off stopping expressing, cos that was just awful! And now I'm finding it hard to stop sitting here with my breastpump... I love being pregnant and the result! And was hoping for 3 babies, but dh says I'm only getting the two, until I'm at least 30 lol and they have to be close so I can go out and get a job and we can move out of this crappy area!

If you and your husband are sure that you're ready for another one, then good luck. Breastfeeding does work as a natural contraceptive (and expressing is just the same thing), although you can still get pregnant while breastfeeding. I'm sure you'll be more likely to get pregnant once you're not lactating anymore.

By the way, good for you for expressing for so long. I couldn't do it with my first.
