Positive OPK and Preg test - Recent period?!?

Hi All,

I'm new so apologies I don't know many of the abbreviations but I am learning!

I miss carried last Dec and had to have a D&C. We've been trying since but my periods had been fairly erratic after. They did start to settle. Then after my covid jab I had a 49 day cycle, and 7 days of bleeding (all be it very light the last 3 days) finishing last Wednesday (14/07).

I had bought a big batch of OPK and preg tests from mother&baby.ie so I'm fairly confident that they are a good product. They look exactly like the ones the hospital used the last time I was preg. So on Saturday I decided I would start tracking my ovulation, to my surprise it can back positive, just 3 days after my period ended. So I've done one every day since, 6 in total, sometimes twice a day, all positive.

Just now I did a pregnancy test. That has also come back positive! It is a super sensitive early detection test. But really how could I be pregnant that quick after my period? I am very confused. Waiting for a few hours to do another test. I don't want to get my husbands hopes up so I'll try not to tell him until I'm sure! Might be worth popping to the chemist for a clear blue one thought I had one but can't find it anywhere.

Not sure how to add pics but the preg test came up with two very dark lines v quickly.

Anyway, anyone have any idea if it could be possible to be pregnant?!

Sorry for your loss Thanks.

Quite possibly - I had positive opks when I was pregnant.

Poppins2016 · 22/07/2021 17:45

Perhaps what you thought was your period was implantation bleeding?

OPKs are also sensitive to HCG and do show positive when pregnant. If all the tests are indicating positive, I'd take it on face value and assume they're positive!

Irishfarmer · 22/07/2021 18:04

Thanks for the replies.

I just took another test, again two lines very quickly and very dark.

I had read the OPKs can pick up HCG that's why I thought I'd do one since I've had 6 positive OPK days. I'm just wondering can a pregnancy test pick up on LH (I think that's the ovulation hormone)

It seemed like a normal enough period (for me that's usually 2/3 heavy days then tapers off), is implantation bleeding that heavy? Also I did do a pregnancy test when my period was so late and it was negative. But if I was pregnant it might have been too early.

I thought I knew a decent amount about my own biology, clearly not enough !

Hi @Irishfarmer

Have you been under EPU before? I would call them up and see if you can go in for bloods, or they may even offer to scan you.

I found out I was pregnant from an LH test being super dark. I have been pregnant 4 times (all miscarried unfortunately) however I have had quite heavy implantation bleeding with each. In fact the last 2, I was convinced I had a period but then found out I was pregnant!

Good luck xx

Irishfarmer · 22/07/2021 18:32

Thanks Msk89. Sorry about your miscarriages :'(

No, I haven't but I might try get to my GP tomorrow, or Monday maybe. I'm not sure what day she does bloods. Hubby will be home soon, no way am I not going to tell him! Might go to tesco as chemist will be closed now and see if I can get a test that shows you approx weeks.

If they do bloods, they will need to repeat them in exactly 48 hours as they compare how the hcg level has gone up. Do you have an EPU near you? Sometimes you can self refer but other times you do have to be referred via a GP. Unfortunately mine know me by first name terms now 🙈

Good idea to get a weeks one x

Irishfarmer · 22/07/2021 19:14

Unfortunately not. There is a maternity unit 40mins drive away and I'm not sure they have an EPU one. Probably do it's a reasonable size hospital. Then Dublin would be about 1.5hr drive. Just I don't drive 🙈 and we've zero public transport where I live!

My gp is excellent and I'd trust her 100% so I think I'll go to her first. She does do bloods and sends them off. If I've to go to the EPU my husband will drive me.

I think I'll get the test tonight but hold out on doing it til morning when the HCG would be highest and most accurate.

To answer one Q - pregnancy tests do not pick up on LH. So I'd agree with others that it's either implantation bleeding you thought was a period, or you're one of these people who still got a faint period even though you are pregnant. Either way I'd say pregnant! Excited for your clearblue

Irishfarmer · 24/07/2021 13:53

Thanks for the info day dream. I just couldn't find a definite answer about the LH online so that's good to know.

I did another 2 one step tests and a regular clear blue one which I finally found. Both came up with v strong lines quickly. I did the weeks one and it says 2-3 weeks since conception so that would put me at 4-5 weeks 😁 I'm delighted. Just shows me my ovulation must be pretty irratic which is why I bought the tests to begin with as I was getting no where using the tracking app.

Can't get bloods til Aug 4th. She only does them 1 day a week. So hopefully I should get a better idea of how far along I am then. But completely over the moon.
