Is it Possible ? 2 Positive Preg Tests but not Pregnant ????

Has anyone experienced what I have ?

I did two pregnancy tests day before yesterday and they showed that I was in very early pregnancy (feint lines) which would be correct. Sad to say that just now my period seems to have come .... or is this a sign of a miscarriage ? I feel awful as I did go out to dinner on Friday night and had a little too much to drink as I was trying not to assume I was pregnant as I was only one day past my supposed period .

It may bwe an early mc this is teh troublw when you test early and nature takes it's course (having alcohol when probably have not made any difference soem pregnacies (the stat is something like 2/3rds end before they start as it is just not viable sending you hugs be kind to yourself it is not your fault.

lovinit · 08/11/2004 05:07

I did another PT this am and it still showed a slight feint positive line ... Am I keeping my hopes up in vain ???

lovinit, I bled on and off throughout this pregnancy (including when my first period was due) and was constantly convinced I was miscarrying. I am 38 weeks and all is ok so the bleeding certainly didnt herald the start of a miscarriage for me. Good luck.

Lowryn · 08/11/2004 07:54

You can sometimes still get a period even though you are pregnant. I would go see your doctor and get a blood test done.

throckenholt · 08/11/2004 08:25

You can get periods even if you are pregnant. But it may be a miscarriage - even if it is you having too much to drink would not have caused it.

Wait a week and then test again.

lovinit · 08/11/2004 11:06

tk you for the comments.

it is weird because the bleeding has stopped, so it isn't really a period.

i will be patient and wait. will report back to let you all know how it goes !

lovinit, I could be an early mc. Unfortunately if you have m/c, there would still be pg hormone in your wee that would give a positive result. Having too much to drink would certainly not cause a m/c.

As others have said, it could easily be nothing, its quite common to have a bit of bleeding early on when your period is due.

Wait a week then test again as others have said - its going to be a long week!!

merryberry · 08/11/2004 11:16

Also, it may well be implantation bleeding. xx

Hi Lovinit. I am in the same boat, pos preg test last Monday on day 36, euphoria/shock/dread until the following Wednesday when bleeding started when lifting heavy boxes (stupid) on day 45 and took preg test which showed fainter line that first one. Rang Ob to cancel appt for 2 weeks time and he told me to take another test one week after bleeding started. Have bled but not like a normal period, no pain, haven't seen a "sac" which I expected to see. By my Ob telling me to test again, I then became hopeful but am trying not to kid myself. I am also thinking about those Mums who report that they bled during the first weeks of their pregnancy. My questions are (and sorry to hijack): 1) if early miscarriage, should there be a sac? 2) is there any pain with the bleeding? 3) For those Mums who did experience bleeding, how much blood was there on a daily basis? TIA.

Good luck Lovinit.

aloha · 08/11/2004 18:37

I had bleeding - lots of brown spotting, and one day of heavy red blood like a period - pregnancy is fine. A friend of mine with a history of miscarriages and infertility had absolutely terrible bleeding - red blood and clots etc - for weeks, but has just had a beautiful, perfect 8lb12oz baby boy. I had no pain or cramping with the bleeding which is a good sign. It's impossible to tell when bleeding starts if it is miscarriage or not. I thought my 'big' bleed was probably a miscarriage coming - but it wasn't. And at the w/e went for sunday lunch with a group of friends and we swapped our pre-conceptual bad behaviour stories. We all drank far too much. In fact, my friend said she got so drunk before she realised she was pregnant (they weren't 'trying') that she went to the loo and her dh had to pull her knickers down for her! We all have very nice kids now btw.

enid · 08/11/2004 18:43

no pain is a good sign. You wouldn't necessarily see a sac, especially this early.

Quackers · 08/11/2004 21:11

Poor you, I've been told that alcohol is so unliekely to be responsible for m/c this early. I too have bled in every pgcy. 2 successful and 2 m/c's. Bleeding doesn;t always mean the end. The only way this early to know for sure is to have 2 blood tests a few days apart that will quantify the HCG in your blood. It needs to double every 48 hrs. Good luck and pls keep us posted. Press your GP for the blood work as a scan will not tell you for sure until 6-7 weeeks when a heartbeat is detected. xxxx

MummyToSteven · 08/11/2004 21:21

Hi Lovinit and Shouldknowbyfriday. sorry you are both having a stressful time, and best of luck with your appointments.

just one point to add to others on the thread - although HCG levels should more or less double every 48 hours (I think the usual stat is go up by at least two thirds), if the increase is a bit less then it is possible that the PG can still be okay. I had some light bleeding and cramps at about 5 weeks PG, and then had bloods done that showed my HCG levels had only got up by 30% in 48 hours (which would be consistent with an ectopic PG). I then had an internal scan the next morning, and everything was fine, and the PG progressed absolutely fine after that.

bonkerz · 08/11/2004 21:24

poor you!

I had a mc at 7 weeks and had no pain. Had day of heavy bleeding then spotting for 3 days, still showing pos on tests then one day heavy again!

lovinit · 09/11/2004 00:37

Thank you e'one for sharing your experiences. I am going to assume that I am not PG to avoid more disappointment (although there are many more people out there who suffer more than I do ) .. I really do not think I am now since my breasts have also gone back to their normal size . They had immediately swollen which was why I suspected and did the test so early on (1 day after missed period)

What I do not understand is, why, if the Pregancy is not successful, has my period not really come. Surely there would be more blood if the embryo had managed to implant . The most blood that came out was one mini tampon full (sorry to be so explicit) . Hmmmm

Took a preg test this morning as advised by my Ob and, of course, BFN. Maybe next month will be our month Lovinit?? Feel I have made some progress with getting the egg date right at least!!

berolina · 11/11/2004 20:24

Hi lovinit, sorry you're going through this. My experience of very early m/c was as follows: tested faintly positive when 5 days late (i.e. 5 days after the last date my period could have possibly come, as my cycle varies a bit), had a hCG blood test the same day (where I am things are done very thoroughly!) = 140, started bleeding three days later. There was no pain and the blood was like a fairly heavy period, went on for about 6 days. Three days after that hCG was back down to 3. Your case sounds a bit different. It's possible that things are OK, but also, sadly, that they're not. Please, though, make sure you get yourself monitored, and let us know how you get on.
So early on, drink does NOT cause a miscarriage. Very very early pregnancy is governed by the 'all-or-nothing' principle - if the pregnancy is going to be OK things like drinking or medication won't harm it.

lovinit · 14/11/2004 11:29

Dear All ... I have been away the past few days and tried to ignore the situation for a bit to let things happen (i,e period) . However, still spotting going on , sporadically, nothing heavy, and dark blood rather than red (aside from once) . I will do a test tomorrow.

I wonder if it is because I was on the pill for months just prior to the month in question, and so the cycle is all mucked up anyway.

ShouldKnowByFriday ... let's stay in touch with each others progress ! We may be starting a
anyone due in September thread if luck is on our side !

Did another PT today, this time positive again and line is more prominent ...

Mixed feelings ... do not want to be overly excited and also anxious that something is wrong as still spotting .

Will make an appointment to see DR to check that it is not ectopic or anything else.

Fingers crossed !

Twiga · 15/11/2004 12:11

Hi Lovnit, that's good news - it's possible to have spotting around when your af would be due if yo are pg and if the line is getting darker sounds like things are ok. Let us know how you get on with the doc, also it might be worth visiting the early pg unit(epu) if you have one nearby - might get seen quicker than by GP. Here's hoping for you x

ShouldKnowByFriday · 15/11/2004 12:23

Hi Lovinit. You must be pregnant and everything okay for you to get a pos result!!!!!! Can you see your doctor and have an early scan? You started bleeding around the same time as me and my test last Wednesday was neg so your situation seems to have all the good signs. If it was an ectopic preg, you would have been in excruciating pain LAST WEEK so I would say that this is not the case.
Please go to your doctor and let us know! It's sounding very good indeed.

lovinit · 16/11/2004 12:59

Dear All, Good news ! Went to see the doctor and did a quick scan , which showed that I am indeed pregnant ! The bleeding is apparently from a small blood clot that is in the uterus, at the moment nothing to worry about but he says that I should go back in 2 weeks to check that everything is still OK ... Warned me that still a 15% chance of MC from now , so to be careful and take things easy ...

Thanks for sharing all your experiences with me ... I will hopefully be speaking you guys again soon on another thread ! I am trying not to get too excited though ... Fingers Crossed !
