Low AMH and IVF

Hi there,

I'm 27 and just got a brutal diagnosis of low AMH - 4.7pmol/l. AFC was 11 and I have one blocked fallopian tube.

I'm going ahead with IVF but am in two minds about taking the natural or conventional route?

Anyone had any success stories?

Hey. Having had a similar diagnosis I know how distraught you must be at present. So sending huge love and hugs to you. My AMH was 0.7 when I started IVF - conventional route didn’t help at all - just kept having to up the drug dosage and in both rounds didn’t end up with any eggs that could be used. The cycle that worked was a natural cycle with DHEA having been taken for a few months, plus acupuncture and a whole summer off work!! This was in 2013 and I know things have really developed in natural cycle since. Remember low AMH doesn’t mean you eggs are poor quality - just you have a lot less of them - but that it only takes one egg. I literally only had one from 3 rounds and it worked.

I was much older but I took DHEA and CoQ10 with my successful cycle. I followed the protocols in 'it starts with the egg' which I feel helped enormously. Good luck

SarBear1980 was that in pmol?
That gives me hope! I'm so devastated

I'm taking Coq10 but I'm worried about taking dhea as I've heard some people say it can make things worse.

Yes…it was…I’d been told they’d let me have 3 attempts and then I should seriously consider egg donation. I was totally against that and had decided it was my eggs only. DHEA was not used here at the time and I had to buy it from Holland but I’m confident that helped - and research seems to say so too. Like @sweetheartyparty says start with the egg was my approach…

@SarBear1980 Oh wow that's amazing! I'm so glad you got your happy ending! That's given me so much hope and I don't feel hopeless! Thank you so much for sharing your experience ❤

I was nervous taking DHEA too so I only took it every other day (so half dose). I asked my ivf consultant about it. He said that he couldn't recommend dhea as its not NICE approved but he seemed pleased I asked. He told me he had a patient who had very low AMH. She took DHEA and the differences between dhea and non-dhea cycles were startling. He started taking it himself after that.
I understand your reluctance. I was very tentative taking them but I saw an improvement even on a half dose

Your IVF journey will be a rollercoaster and at times it will feel hugely traumatic. I was totally honest with everyone around me at every step and for me that made it so much easier - my work were amazing and husbands too. I wish you all the love and best wishes over the next few months. ❤️

@sweetheartyparty I've started taking it! I thought what have I got to lose, I've started on 25mg but will go up to 50. Thank you!

@SarBear1980 Thank you! I'm trying to stay really positive. I'm booked to start IVF I July. I'm so nervous but excited! Fingers crossed 🤞
