TTC with recurrent UTIs

Hi there,
Really interested to know whether anyone is in the same boat and whether they have any advice really. I have suffered from recurrent UTIs for a number of years now which seem to be triggered by intercourse (not great when you’re TTC🙄). I was referred to Gynaecology but no cause could be found. I was prescribed nitrofurantoin to use as as a prophylaxis and have to take a dose after intercourse. I’m concerned however that these recurrent UTIs may hinder our conception chances and of course, having to take medication whilst TTC is not something I really want to do if there’s a better alternative. Is D-Mannose safe to take whilst TTC and during the first few weeks of gestation- I wouldn’t want to unknowingly do any harm to any potential foetus. I’ve read that it can be quite effective at preventing UTIs. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks 😊

Hey!

Same boat as you, had all the scans, ultrasounds, blood tests everything and they still don't know the official cause so I take a low does of antibiotics each day.
I spoke with my gp before I started trying and they changed my antibiotics to ones that are safe in early pregnancy and ttc 😊

Ahh I’m so sorry to hear this. ❤️

We’ve been TTC since last year and I got my positive last week 🥺 praying this is our rainbow baby 🌈✨

I have Interstitial Cystitis. It’s a bit like recurrent UTIs r.e all the symptoms but I have no actual infection when I get tested at the doctor. I have a urologist and they prescribed me medication which reduce my symptoms, but they aren’t always considered safe when TTC.

I took D-Mannose and it definitely helped me a lot with my symptoms - also when my symptoms were bad, bicarb and water could calm it down almost instantly! Hot water bottle also helped me when my symptoms were really bad.

IC isn’t quite the same as recurrent UTIs as I was able to make some diet changes which also help keep things at bay, just wanted you to know you’re not alone in your struggle! ❤️

Thanks so much for your message. I’m relieved to hear that your GP was able to suggest a prophylactic pregnancy safe antibiotic to take - was it nitrofurantoin by any chance? X

Thank you for your kind message ☺️ Think I’m going to give both the D-Mannose and buy some bicarb for the cupboard just in case. Your advice is greatly appreciated. X

I had nitrofurantoin prescribed to me whilst pregnant in first trimester with a UTI so I'm sure it's safe (although worth double checking it's the same over a longer period of time, I expect it would be though).
