Hello,

I have had day 3 and day 21 bloods done which appear to be ok but concerned prolactin may be high?

Prolactin level 153 mIU/L (day 3)

Any ideas?

I think the normal range for prolactin is huge and anything under about 450 is considered fine in a non-lactating person. Pretty sure if your doctor hasn’t flagged it, you’re all good :)

Bagelsandbrie · 25/05/2021 12:28

That’s normal. Anything between 80-250 is normal. I have a pituitary tumour and mine has been as high as 3500 - I just took medication to reduce it when I wanted to conceive (I have two dc now).

I depends, do you have other symptoms? If you do it's likely they will try treating, if not they might leave it.

I've been on treatment for it for nearly 10 years now even though my levels are just out of normal if I stop taking Cabergoline. I didn't have a period for 3 years before starting ( they started 3 weeks after starting Cabergoline) , then I tried stopping medication 2 years in and I became hyperthyroid (despite gaining 4st in 3 months) so had to start again.

Usually before treatment they'll send you for an MRI as it's caused by a benign lump in your pituary gland.

@fa77 @Bagelsandbrie thank you for the reassurance, just got a bit panicky!

@Lalala1985 symptoms? I only had the blood test because we have been ttc for over a year...

Mine were found out to be high-ish but not high enough to do an MRI so I've been taking bromocriptine for the last couple on months. I just tested and my levels have gone down but because I just found out I'm pregnant she's keeping me on till ultrasound.

@CherryPIEx well I didn't have periods for 3 years, daily headaches, fainting frequently, gaining weight and my boobs were leaking.

So very small things can cause your prolactin to be elevated: like having just eaten, the time of day an uncomfortable bra. Usually they'll do a repeat blood test to make sure it's not coincidental.

Obviously I don't know the bigger picture, if they think that's the cause then it's one of the easiest causes of infertility to fix.
