When to class CD1 for miscarriage?

Hi, I'm currently in the midst of a MC having realised with EPAU visits that baby wasn't developing. I'm pleased it's not another medicated miscarriage I had one last year & I bled off and on for 2 months then had 3 failed IVF attempts, this was natural conception before next IVF.

I started spotting/wiping a bit of blood last weds, then Thursday it stopped, Friday was some brown blood when wiping but not much, yesterday started heavier (but still not very heavy, didn't go through a pad for instance) but had some clots, mixture of red/brown & bad cramps. Today bigger clots but still small (was only 5+2 on second scan) and still not constant.

We are keen to TTC again to see if we can catch again naturally.

So based on spotting/then heavier...When would you class cycle day 1as? I ovulated around CD19/20 last time, and would CB advanced/connect OPKs be accurate if starting in around 10 days time? I'm rubbish with cheap OPKS so don't use them.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sorry for your loss.

I’m not sure you can count a “proper” CD1, as it’s so variable I’m not sure knowing it would be helpful. I had my first period post-miscarriage 29 days after the day I started bleeding though, which was very light spotting which lasted for 4 days before getting heavier. I was 8 weeks pregnant.

I think I’m right in saying that pregnancy hormones can affect OPKs, so you may want to make sure you have a negative pregnancy test before doing any OPKs.

Thanks @KFleming yeah I know it's so hard, especially as I had spotting then a day with basically nothing, then more, just trying not to waste expensive sticks 🤣 was 29 days vaguely in line with pre MC cycles? So you put CD1 at the start of your spotting? Thank you again

29 days was actually about 5ish days shorter than my regular cycle. So I don’t know if I ovulated earlier than usual, or maybe I didn’t ovulate at all that cycle.

Sorry for your loss @Minster2012 I was told to count the day you start bleeding/spotting as CD1 after a mc. I had a mmc with erpc 19 days ago now so assuming I'm on cd19,
still showing as positive on pg tests and spotting slightly but my libido has come back with a vengeance (poor DH) so hoping it means I'm ovulating (I ovulated cd20 on the cycle we fell pregnant).
It's all so confusing, especially as you just want to start trying again!

@KFleming thank you, that's interesting to know as I don't really have regular cycles so that's why I'm keen to track, the one before I caught was non ovulation so it's highly likely this one will be too

@BaaBaaEmily thank you very much, sorry for your loss too, it's horrible isn't it when you just want to get on again. it's so hard this time compared to my MMC last time where it just went "nothing" then full blood, this time 3 days of spotting but def full force yesterday & today so I'm unsure if to count weds or yesterday. I ovulated around CD19/20 last time but after months of non ovulation cycles it was the first one where I had confirmed ovulation by bloods. I don't really get other ovulation signs like you do, DH & I have to be on it throughout, which can be tiring like you say! 🤣

Oh that adds some difficulty then @Minster2012 I would personally go from the start of the spotting but I don't know if that's correct or not. Could you ask your GP/EPU or fertility clinic if you were about to start IVF? Would you be able to have bloods again this cycle to pinpoint ovulation?

Minster2012 · 17/05/2021 13:15

@BaaBaaEmily thank you, I might use the first day of spotting and not use the expense OPKs this cycle just have a lot of sex around when I think it might be (I think we might have a weekend away then anyway?!)
I can get my bloods done I think, I have a lovely phlobotenist at the GP who said she could get me on if I wanted to last time so will def do that next month maybe not this one 🤞🏻
