Sertraline and TTC

Hi all, just wondering if anyone had experiences with ttc on sertraline or is currently trying? (no judgements please)

Been really struggling since ttc because I thought it would have happened by now and I struggle with low mood/anxiety anyway. I have only just started a low dose that will be increased but already feeling like it's making me more anxious.

Has it helped anyone to feel better and lessen the anxiety around ttc? Did it make things worse in the beginning but ultimately made it easier to conceive? Were there any side effects? Or anyone else in the same boat and just wanna chat?

Hey I just started sertraline about 2 weeks ago, I'm generally very anxious and feel this has made me a bit less anxious around ttc. I'm only a couple of months into ttc so can't really see much more than that! I do worry about effects in early pregnancy though x

Say not see*!

I'm on Sertraline and plan to start TTC soon. It's meant to be the safest anti-depressant for during pregnancy

GoBrookeYourself · 22/04/2021 11:54

I’m on sertraline and have been for about a year. Currently 9 weeks pregnant and saw the midwife today for the first time- she’s happy for me to stay on it, it’s safe during pregnancy. I hope that puts your mind at rest a little!

Good to hear @polkadotpixie and @GoBrookeYourself it's definitely helping with my mental health so I want to continue!

Thanks all for your replies girls.

I'm not so much worried about the effects during pregnancy anymore as have been reassured it's safe. Just looking for encouragement I guess that it will take some of the anxiety out of ttc and make me more positive. I'm also a very anxious person and so the ttc journey has been hell so far, just don't believe it will happen for me.

@RoseGold24 I'm glad to hear they are helping a bit. Did they make you feel worse at first? I'm feeling super anxious and a bit nauseous.

@polkadotpixie Good luck in your ttc journey and @GoBrookeYourself Congrats on your pregnancy! I take it the tablets have helped you both a lot with general mood/anxiety?

@suzy124 I felt more anxious to begin with, then felt really hungry but didn't want to eat which was weird cause I'm actually so greedy haha! But I felt better when I ate. Also had a bit of a dry mouth. I'd say all that was just the first week. I'm on week two now and generally feeling a bit brighter x

Just to provide some reassurance, I'm currently 35+3 and have taken sertraline at 50mg throughout my whole pregnancy for severe anxiety and BPD. I'm also on epilepsy medication. I've had plenty of scans all showing a very healthy baby ☺️

I've also had appointments with the perinatal mental health team who have assured me that sertraline is one of the safest medications to be in in pregnancy for the baby. A lot of research has shown that woman who do have MH issues and go untreated throughout pregnancy are actually in the highest risk group. A GO gave me some outdated advice about sertraline and the perinatal nurses actually wrote to my practice with the most up to date information on it.

I fell pregnant within 6 weeks x

Good luck on TTC journey xx

Thanks @FirstTimeMumma2021 and congratulations. I also suffer from BPD so it's nice to know you're so reassured taking the meds during pregnancy. I was on Lamotrogine previously but don't think it did much for me.

I've just gone from 25mg to 50, still yet to feel any real benefit and side effects have been horrible but seem to be lessening.

My partner is on sertraline- been on it a year and has increased from 50mg to 100mg recently.
He has good days and bad days but the panic attacks have lessened.
We are now expecting our first baby but it wasn’t an easy journey as the sertraline messed with his libido and performance.
Have you considered counselling alongside the medication?
This helped him quite a bit.
What is it about TTC that is making you anxious?

suzy124 · 04/05/2021 12:47

@Kona84 good to hear they helped your partner. Yes I'll be starting with a new therapist soon hopefully. I've always struggled with anxiety and depression so my mind always defaults to the negative. I'm just convinced that we will be one of those couples who won't be able to conceive, and I want a family more than anything in the world. We're still under the year mark but the fact it hasn't happened yet has me feeling it never will. Also the fact that my partner can't finish in me so we are having to self-inseminate to try to conceive. I can't just 'relax' and have sex for fun as is so often the advice.
