Short luteal phase

Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on trying to conceive with a short luteal phase?
Trying to conceive #2, didn't have any problems conceiving #1 (took about 3 months), so that time I never tried opks etc so don't know what my luteal phase was then.
We've been trying to conceive #2 for 7 months, two months ago I started tracking with cheap opks, both cycles I've got my peak cd16, so assume ovulate about cd17, but then af comes cd23, so about 6 days after ovulation which seems far to short.
I'm taking pregnacare conception but I've only been taking these the two cycles I've tracked opks, I've heard about these lengthening cycles but nothing about them possibly shortening them. Before taking them my cycles seemed more mixed 21-26 days.
I don't know if I should try something else, extra vitamins/swap pregnacare for something (maybe Severn seas as I used them first time round) ?

Sorry for the long rant, it just feels like it's pointless trying at the moment with such a short luteal phase.

I didn't want to read and not respond. I also have a short LP, 8 days. I went to gp this month about it and am getting bloods done, got day 3 bloods done and will be back for day 21. Sorry I can't be of much help but I understand how you feel. I've been really down about it as I don't feel I can get pregnant on an 8 day LP

Thanks for the reply, I have found another thread on here that I was getting some advice from.
I think I'm going to stop the pregnacare this cycle and if cycle still the same make an appointment at the gp. Problem is if they want to do 21 day bloods for me, that's only a couple of day before af comes for me so not sure it would show the right things. Did the gp seem ok about it, I read somewhere about some just dismissing the short LP and that's it's better to just say worried about short irregular cycles.

Yeah I was a bit worried mentioning it as haven't been trying too long (4th cycle) so I just said my periods are coming too soon after I ovulate. He was actually really nice. I said that day 21 isn't 7dpo for me sometimes it's only 1dpo and he said it's still worth checking to see where we are at

Hope it's ok for me to jump on this thread!

@Fifi1086 I'm really glad to read the GP listened even though you'd only been trying for a few months! I've just got my third period since we started trying and my LPs have been around 6 days so I was getting worried.

I'm not planning to see my GP yet, I'm going to wait a few more cycles as I only had my implant removed in Jan so I'm hoping everything's just working itself out. But I was worried I'd have to wait a year before I could even make an appointment. At this rate I'd be on cycle 18 by then and I don't know how I'd cope! If nothing changes by the summer I'll make an appointment.

Thanks for sharing, it's really helpful to hear from others in a similar situation.

Hi @Cantthinkofaname99 I’m not an expert but have been TTC #2 for 18 months (I was pregnant for 3 of those months that ended in MMC) with a short LP (8 days).
Stuff I’ve learnt and tried;

  • B Vits and Vit C is recommended
  • Agnus Castus can regulate cycles. Soy Isoflavones might be worth looking at.
  • acupuncture may be worth a go
Should say the above didn’t massively help me but I know for others it has worked.
  • make sure day 21 test is done at the right time (guess for you 5dpo)
I am now being seen privately and it seems that ovulation isnt strong enough meaning progesterone dips quickly in luteal phase. So I’m on a letrozole/progesterone cycle support combination. Also just wanted to add that I have spent days (weeks!) on Google. For some people it seems a short LP is fine, for others like me it’s not so fine. Maybe give it a little more time, get the day 3/21 tests done and throw a few natural remedies at it! Good luck!

Hi @TTCAli welcome, fingers crossed for you that it is just the implant working its way out your system.

@Kitte321 thank you for the info, and sorry to hear about the MC.
it's so hard to know what to try. I was looking at Agnus castus before but I was put off by the fact it said not to take if pregnant/trying to get pregnant.

Definitely considering the B and C vitamins, I just think a couple of months without taking anything would at least let me work out my base line! Feel like I've not had many cycles where my body had just been left to do it's normal thing (have been TTC for 7 months this time but always been taking some supplements)

So a little update, I had 21 day bloods taken on day 20 a couple of weeks ago, chased up drs yesterday and only spoke to receptionist who will chase dr, I asked her what result was and she said 15 although she didn't seem very sure. I did have a really weird cycle last month (the month I have the test!) spotting from day 22 but AF didn't start till day 30 and was really heavy. I will wait to see what the dr says but I'm hoping they at least redo the test. Guessing these results aren't great?

When I spoke to her before she didn't think my short luteal phase was an issue and seemed to think because I was getting peaks on opks everything should be ok. I did push her a bit and managed to get the tests done. I do get 'peaks' on opks but the lines never seem that dark, although maybe due to when I test?
