I have a friend here for lunch today who is undergoing fertility treatment but having trouble getting through to her consultant today (Friday they've all buggered off for the weekend). She wants to know if you can start taking Clomid at any point in the month before ovulation, or whether you have to take it from day one of your cycle. I know there are lots of clomid graduates out there - please help my friend. Any positive clomid stories/tips would help too.

Hi there - I only just heard of Clomid the other week from a friend in Australia who knows someone that's taking it. She's offline now but will be back in the morning - if you haven't got your answer by then I'll do my best to find out for you

lou33 · 29/10/2004 14:38

Maybe this would help?

ladymuck · 29/10/2004 14:46

It's definitely not an "any time" start. From memory it is Day One. At my hospital it broadly has a 50% success rate (assuming clear sperm test), and there are plenty of Clomid babies on the site.

ladymuck · 29/10/2004 14:51

Ooops - just dug out my notes - it was a Day 5 start, not day 1.

malinki · 30/10/2004 10:07

Wilbur, just got this message, I am currently taking Clomid for PCOS and have been told that I must start this on day 2-6 of CD, the 1st CD must be when your friend is actually bleeding and not spotting, so usually for me, I have 24 hours where I have been just spotting brown discharge, then the next day, full red bodied blood (sorry it is so gross), then I take Clomid the day after, hope this helps.

I had to take Clomid on day one. This is going back 10 years and 7 years. I now have 3 children - the first due to Clomid. Make sure she is strictly followed up on this - it can't be taken forever. Watch out for the horrific mood swings.

weepy · 31/10/2004 00:02

I was on Clomid lat year (now have twins as a result) and it was definitely taken on days 2-6. I was on it for 5 months and it was horriffic so i will never forget the details!

malinki · 08/11/2004 15:49

weepy, what dose were you on, 100mg hasn't been working for me, 50 mg the 1st month (May), then 100 mg, June, July, August and September and 150mg after a HSG in October, now waiting to see if I'm pregnant, I only ask about doseage as I wanted to know about side effects, when I was taking 50 mg and 100 mg, I had no real side effects other than all the PMS about 3 days before my period was due, this month, however is totally different, about 1 week ago, my boobs started to tingle and hurt me, this is still happening and I'm not due on until this Friday (see Very very sore boobs thread)

I am on month 2 of clomid. You take it days 2 -6 of your cycle. Had some side effects but not too bad.

greenbug · 10/11/2004 21:36

Malinki all the best to you! I hope it works out and it's good news.
wilbur, it is day 2-6 as the general practice. I think it shifted from day 5-9 or something as I have read studies on the both periods and the first one apparently has proven more succesful in recent years.
I am also scheduled for clomid so waiting for the period to kick in to get it going.
I've read a lot about the side effect of clomid. I also read about increased chances for birth defects when taking the drug. To all experienced and succesful clomid mums out there, is there any truth to this?

applepie · 10/11/2004 21:49

wilbur - it was definitely prescribed to me for set times in the month, my hazy memory reminds me from around days 3-8 of the month.

greenbug - I took clomid twice for around 6 months each time (cant remember dosage) and have 2 healthy thriving DSs age 4 and 18 months. I do remember the moodswings though.

weepy · 10/11/2004 22:42

I also didn't have any joy until I took 150 dosage and then hit lucky on the second month. I felt foul from the first time I took the 50mg and things got worse for me as the dosage went up - sore boobs, hot flushes, nausea, mood swings. As for all of the stuff about possible side-effects for the babies - who knows? I am not being flippant but I took the view that this was my only chance so I would go for it. My gynaecologist who prescribed it has been getting women pregnant on Clomid for years and says he has never come across any problems, but obviously there have been some probs as indicated by the statistics and the warnings. I felt that like with any drug you take there is always a slight risk but the risk was definitely outweighed by the benefits in this case.

Mind you I had the most horrific pregnancy and had to have the twins delivered by emergency C-section at 28 weeks so maybe all wasn't that great ...... but they seem ok now.

runtus · 11/11/2004 09:36

I have to admit weepy that I am in the same camp as you regarding possible side effects and dangers, if this is what it takes to get pg then I am happy to take the risk. I am due to start my clomid next cycle and to be honest, I can't wait!

greenbug · 20/11/2004 11:51

Hi Runtus,

Have you started Clomid?
I am still waiting.

If we start around the same time we can have a Clomid support club

greenbug · 21/11/2004 22:32

Another urgent question about Clomid: Can it be taken for one month only? stopped for a while and then restarted?
Or when it's given for 3 months it has to be done in an uniterrupted sequence if pg does not occur?

Please help!
greenbug

ladymuck · 21/11/2004 22:35

It doesn't have to be taken for a continuous stint of 3 or 6 months - you can take it for a month and then take a break (esp if dp/dh won't be around for the critical time). I believe that as you are only advised to take it for a total of 3-6 cycles, you would be advised not to take it in any cycle where you couldn't conceive.

runtus · 22/11/2004 10:23

HI Greenbug, not started taking it yet - still waiting for Af to show up. I'll let yuo know whenit does though - support would be fab!
